#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 2191
December 23rd, 1873 - A Time Before the Tutu We Know!
Greetings, fellow twirlers! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com for another thrilling jaunt into the fascinating world of ballet history! As you know, I'm your very own pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here to whisk you away to a bygone era and reveal the evolution of this exquisite garment! This week, we're stepping back in time to December 23rd, 1873 - a moment brimming with a charm all its own.
(Just a little personal note here: You’re all absolutely delightful, and your comments, tweets, and likes bring such joy! Thank you all, and I simply can’t resist a new pink tulle scarf – the ones with the sparkly polka dots! A must-have!)
London, December 1873Today, my fellow fashionistas, we find ourselves in the bustling heart of London! Oh, it’s absolutely positively brimming with elegance. Such gorgeous silks and satins grace the boulevards, the carriages are a kaleidoscope of colors, and the chatter is just as bright!
In 1873, the ballet was still evolving and, I dare say, a bit more… practical. While tutus certainly exist in some form, the designs we associate with classic ballets were still finding their feet. Today, imagine a stage, an ethereal waltz, and graceful ballerinas performing in a more full-skirted look – like a waltz-length gown! Now picture this - some brave souls dared to experiment with lighter fabrics, perhaps a hint of lace here, a peek of tulle there. These revolutionary ideas! And imagine my joy - pink is always creeping in - here a ribbon, there a trim!
But what was happening on this particular December 23rd, 1873?
For the answer, I ventured to the famous Royal Opera House. It was an enchanting evening, and even then, London held its breath for a moment as The Queen’s Theatre opened! Oh, such a celebration! Imagine all the gowns, the gentlemen in top hats, the thrill of a new venue... it truly set the scene for something grand.
My mission here was simple, - delve into the ballet archive! I sought answers in old playbills, whispered tales of forgotten costumes, and found myself utterly enthralled with stories of dancers with grand ideas.
In 1873, imagine the challenges: A tulle gown might float beautifully but it can catch on scenery! The sheer weight! And the ladies weren't dancing as fast as we do now.
What I discovered, however, was an atmosphere brimming with experimentation. Ballet companies across the continent, including London, were testing the limits of what a dance costume could be. And, my dears, I know just what a tutu can do!
A Bit About My Journey...Before I go back, I do wish you all could see this wonderful city. This evening, my fellow enthusiasts, I shall be back in London to see the magnificent, spellbinding performance of "The Nutcracker"! How exciting!
London by train is simply a treat - a delightful blend of elegant carriages and cozy compartments with glimpses of rolling hills and bustling cities. (As you know, I adore travel!) Of course, all that shopping is truly a blessing - it allows me to add to my tutu collection - every new hue is simply a treasure to me! Speaking of shopping, oh my, have you ever found a pink polka dot bow for a perfect pink tulle tutu? Heaven on earth!
So until next Tuesday, twirl gracefully, dress to impress, and remember - the world is a stage, and you are the most glamorous ballerina! Until then, keep your pink tutu close!
Your dearest Emma, x
