Tutu Tuesday #2211: A Whirl Through History - 12th May 1874

Oh my dears, hello! It's Emma here, back from a whirlwind trip to… wait for it… 1874! How utterly thrilling, darling! You won't believe the incredible fashion I discovered on my travels. Honestly, I just had to share all the lovely, oh-so-delightful details with you lovely lot.

As always, my cherished pink tutu went everywhere with me. Imagine: me gliding through 19th century London in this glorious garment - picture it! Pink feathers, shimmering silk, and oh! a dazzling display of ribbons, all bouncing around as I waltz my way through the streets - positively divine.

The pièce de résistance? The opera house! It was absolutely bursting with life and style - a flurry of silks, feathers and velvets! And, to my utter delight, I stumbled upon the most captivating ballerina… with her swirling skirts and light, airy steps! Oh, the way she twirled, so beautifully ethereal… she was utterly breathtaking!

You see, dears, this is why I adore time travel. The chance to witness those incredible moments that have shaped ballet history, like witnessing that beautiful ballerina in action!

But back to 1874… what’s all this about fashion in the late Victorian era then? Think high collars, flowing fabrics, layers upon layers - oh my! The bustles, those amazing contraptions worn behind the dress to make ladies look extra curvy, were quite the fashion statement. And of course, the beautiful hats - with all those feathers and ribbons.

And don’t forget the men! My, weren't they quite the sartorial chaps! From crisp morning suits with high buttoned waistcoats, to dashing double breasted jackets in bold colours, they certainly knew how to dress for an occasion.

Speaking of dashing chaps… did you know that The Royal Albert Hall officially opened on this day in 1871? This magnificent venue is an iconic part of London’s artistic heart - it’s no wonder it was the site for the opening night of the first "grand concert." You could even say it’s the home of countless historical events, from music to poetry to...you guessed it...ballet!

Oh darling, it just gets more glamorous with every new time travel experience. I'm absolutely bursting with exciting stories from this jaunt through time. You can almost feel the magic in the air, can't you?

Now, my dears, let’s raise a toast to all things fabulous, fashionable and pink, especially the wondrous, twirling art form of ballet!

P.S. Did you know that 1874 saw the first formal ballerina outfits - yes, that means tights and short tutus! Oh, my darling, what a delight for the eye, how graceful, how magical! You wouldn't believe how popular those little tutus were in ballet classrooms and performances. Oh, and my dears, remember, the color that dominated these outfits was a magnificent, stunning pink. Imagine!

P.P.S Did you know that the grand finale of my time travel trip, you guessed it, took me to London’s glorious theatre district, home of the renowned Royal Opera House. Can you imagine, my dears, sitting in a plush, velvet seat at a real live ballet performance - with so many fascinating characters - an explosion of colour and beautiful costumes! The air is simply alive with joy, grace, and the sheer elegance of it all. I had to watch every dance! Every arabesque, every pirouette… the magic is simply electrifying, my dears.

Stay tuned for my next blog post, dears, as I unveil the secrets behind the glamorous dresses of another time! Just remember - there's no such thing as too much pink!
