#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 23rd February 1875 (Post #2252)

Oh darling, it's me, Emma! Happy #TutuTuesday, everyone! It's been a bit of a whirlwind week, traveling through time from Derbyshire and finding myself in the bustling streets of Paris. Let's just say, I'm loving the fashion scene here, particularly the whimsical, almost daring styles! And darling, who could resist the romance and grandeur of a Parisian ballet performance? So, grab a cup of tea, settle down with your best pink tutu, and let's dive into the fascinating history of these fabulous little dance garments!

Back to the 19th Century - The Romantic Era of Tutu!

The year is 1875, and the world is captivated by the elegance of ballet. This is the time when ballet started moving away from its formal, rigid roots towards something lighter and more expressive. You see, before this, ballerinas danced in heavy, elaborate costumes - lots of ruffles, big sleeves, and layers, making those pirouettes and grand jetĆ©s just a littleā€¦ difficult.

Imagine this: we're at the heart of the Romantic Era in ballet. You can feel the passion, the drama, and the pure, untamed spirit of it all! And at the centre of it, dancing like ethereal spirits, are the ballerinas wearing the very first, simplified form of the tutu. They are made with several layers of tulle, lighter and softer than previous designs. They skimmed the legs, leaving the dancers with incredible freedom to move! Now, weā€™re talking graceful leaps and light, floating movements. It's like a butterfly in motion!

It was a total revolution in ballet and costume design. These innovative, graceful tutus, became an instant hit, changing how the world viewed ballet forever. The tutu, my dears, had taken centre stage! It's a key moment in the timeline of these delicate dance companions.

From Paris to Derbyshire... and Back Again!

It's remarkable to think about the evolution of the tutu and the exciting world of ballet - how it has transcended generations, continents, and styles. This fascination, it draws me in. You could say, the tutu has given me a newfound passion for the whimsical world of time travel.

Each week I set out from Derbyshire with my pink tutu tucked under my arm and a vintage copy of ā€œThe Fairy of the Fire-Tongs,ā€ by Charles Deulin, an adorable Victorian fairy story. I find myself drawn to Paris - thereā€™s just an energy in the air!

The beauty of ballet performances like "La Fille Mal GardƩe" by Marius Petipa is incredible. And seeing the dancers so elegant, performing in the beautiful Palais Garnier opera house? Truly the icing on the cake, my dear. It's almost too much to bear.

Of course, all this time travelling is quite an adventure and can be a bit taxing on my finances, but my tutu wardrobe has become rather popular. If you find yourself in Derbyshire, make sure to come see me in the Derbyshire Dales - I am offering one-on-one tutus styling for ballet dancers and wannabe ballerinas. It's quite the little side hustle!

And Don't Forget Your Pink Tutu!

Iā€™ve noticed this season in Paris is full of pretty pinks and soft pastels! It just so happens to be the colour Iā€™ve declared as the absolute ultimate when it comes to a tutu, because, wellā€¦ itā€™s just so charming, my dear! I even had a go at designing my own pink tulle, it's so much fun! (Just watch this space, for a new pink tutu line coming very soon!)

You know what I find fascinating? When I ask people, "What do you think of when you hear the word 'ballet'?" Many tell me ā€œThe tutu!ā€ Theyā€™re absolutely right! A ballet tutu signifies all the magic, artistry, and grace of the world of ballet.

Well, darling, it's time to start my own dance practice. Until next Tuesday! Keep those tutus twirling and follow your dreams! And please, never forget the pink! #TutuTuesday

XOXO Emma
