#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: 1875-11-02

Welcome back to my pink-tastic #TutuTuesday blog, darling readers! I'm Emma, your resident time-travelling tutu enthusiast, and today we're dipping our toes into the glamorous world of ballet history! It's Tuesday, the day we celebrate the magnificent history of the tutu. Now, let's hop onto our pink, feather-light time machine and whisk ourselves back to… 2nd November 1875!

Remember, my darlings, I'm your #PinkTutuAmbassador and I always find my way around through a good dance. This week I'm in Vienna, the heart of European dance! I’ve just witnessed a truly glorious performance by the Vienna State Opera. The whole place buzzed with excitement. There were fabulous tutus, even a splash of pink in there, and you simply could not tear your eyes from the grace of the dancers. This time period, 1875, marks a glorious turning point in dance history, particularly when it comes to the design of tutus. Let's see what makes it so special, shall we?

So, imagine this… A lavish, gold-dusted theatre, glittering chandeliers reflecting onto the audience in a million dazzling lights, a soft melody whispering through the air, the stage is bathed in a spotlight…and there, dancing gracefully in a cloud of soft tulle, are some of the finest ballerinas in the world, each in their own incredible, meticulously crafted, tutus. Every single detail tells a story – from the intricate layers of tulle to the carefully placed embellishments. They’re works of art, just as magnificent as the performances themselves!

What was trending in 1875?

Back then, the classic Romantic Tutu – which we can easily spot with its layers of airy tulle billowing gracefully outwards – was making a grand entrance. The tutus were becoming a statement! They were a visual spectacle of delicacy, lightness, and artistry. It was a period where we saw tutus become more extravagant, boasting more and more layers to achieve an ethereal floating effect – almost like a dream brought to life!

Did you know, my dearest tutu-lovers, that: The tutu of this era was more than just a dress! It symbolised freedom, artistry, and the ability to defy gravity through elegant, powerful dance. It reflected the burgeoning ideas of the era about femininity and beauty - a dance and dress made for movement, designed to showcase the beauty and grace of the female form. How exciting, eh?

And let's not forget the wonderful ballet shoes of this period! Remember my lovely readers, these are also a very important part of the dance. These were designed to be light as a feather, offering maximum flexibility and precision for intricate dance steps. Beautiful shoes are just as important as beautiful tutus, darling. And when worn with the perfect ballet costume, it creates a magical look.

A time travelling spree:

Did I tell you about the fashion scene here in Vienna? It's been like a whirlwind tour of exquisite fashion houses and beautiful ballrooms! And yes, the elegant outfits! Such elegance. The colours of the dresses – they’re the very colours that would bring life to our Pink Tutu blog! But the tutus, especially here in Vienna – that is what makes everything really special. You could get lost in the layers and the patterns and those intricate details that we would find on the tutus in 1875. There’s nothing quite like a dance show to really capture the essence of an era, my dears.

Tutu trends in Vienna?

Well, let’s just say there is a great focus on beautiful detail, my readers. They don’t leave out a single sparkle! And the textures of these amazing fabrics that make up the tutus... They range from soft tulle and satins to delicate lace and silk. The creators of these amazing costumes truly took their time to get it right and achieve the perfect look. What I love the most, my lovelies, are the gorgeous trimmings that were very popular. Imagine these lovely trims! Think sparkling gems, soft velvet, exquisite lace – they all added a bit of extra magic. It’s a dreamland for a tutu aficionado like myself!

And speaking of the tutus that caught my eye – my dear readers, remember to be careful out there, as my next blog post, #TutuTuesday #2288, is all about… Well, that’s a surprise.

But before you go, I must urge you to never underestimate the impact of the ballet tutu. From its historical roots to the current, diverse landscape of modern dance, the tutu continues to enchant, to inspire, and to bring magic to the world. And for my next adventure – well, the Pink Tutu has her eye on another adventure and this time... Oh, we’re headed to Russia, to the heart of another spectacular dance tradition – and trust me, it’s one you wouldn’t want to miss. But until then, go forth, spread the love of dance, and embrace the tutus – and remember…

Let your inner tutu shine!

With pink-tastic passion, Emma
