#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 23rd November 1875 (Post #2291)
Oh, darlings! How are you all doing this Tuesday? I'm so excited, because today is a truly special #TutuTuesday - we're going right back in time, all the way to November 23rd, 1875! Just picture it: gaslight flickering, carriages rattling by, and a world where the only way to travel was by steam train (although, the carriages are awfully lovely!) - that's where our little journey starts.
As always, I'm here to tell you all about the beautiful history of ballet tutus, and oh, my dears, what a story this date holds! Remember, this isn't just about any tutu, it's all about the pink tutu! My motto, you know - "Wear pink, feel pink, love pink, and spread the love of pink!".
But before we dive in, I'm practically bouncing with excitement, because this week, I'm back in Paris! Imagine the elegance, the je ne sais quoi! The cobbled streets, the boudoirs filled with exquisite gowns... it’s like a fairytale. But for today, it's all about the Palais Garnier. Now, my darling friends, do you know why I'm here? Because on this very date, the iconic Palais Garnier opened its grand doors to the public for the first time. Can you even imagine?! The sheer wonder of stepping into such a place... all that glitz, glamour, and pure artistry!
Think about it: November 23rd, 1875, in this opulent, grand opera house, a whole new chapter was written for the history of ballet! Just imagine, all those dancers swirling across the stage in the very first performance, a majestic rendition of "L'Apparition d'Arlésienne" by Vincent d'Indy. Wouldn't you just love to be whisked away on the wings of the music and the grandeur of the theatre?
But back to those tutus! While tutus are usually associated with fluffy layers of tulle, this is the era of the romantic tutu, and what a graceful and poetic silhouette it was! Long, soft layers of tulle flowing like an ethereal dream... think of beautiful ballerinas gracefully weaving their magic, a vision of flowing elegance and captivating movement. You might say it’s the embodiment of all things lovely, especially with a sprinkle of pink, don’t you think?
We are entering the era of tutus becoming much more intricate, showcasing their delicate beauty. Those big, puffy romantic tutus were a real statement! It's amazing how the costumes evolve to reflect the story of ballet itself. It’s the beginning of a dazzling era.
Of course, this historical peek would be incomplete without mentioning my favourite part – the fashion! Imagine Parisian streets lined with boutiques overflowing with stunning clothes, hats, gloves, and yes, you guessed it, shoes! Swoon.
Now, dear friends, I’m off to wander through this wonderful, fashionable world of Parisian delights! Don't forget, I’m hoping to find the most elegant vintage pink tutu in the entire city! Who knows what wonders I'll discover!
As always, I’ll be sure to write all about it in my next post – maybe a Tutu Tuesday Fashion Extravaganza? Keep those tutu-clad dreams flowing, and until next week, let's all keep those pink tutu fantasies alive!
Your Pink-tutu-wearing Time Travelling Ballerina,
Emma xoxo
