#TutuTuesday: A Peek into Ballet History – 18th January 1876 (Post #2299)
Bonjour mes chéries! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveler, back again for another #TutuTuesday! This week, I've taken a rather splendid trip back to the late 1800s, and I must say, the fashion scene here is utterly captivating.
It’s quite hard to believe it, but back then, there wasn’t quite the same… thrill of seeing a sea of fluffy pink tutus swirling about on stage. Mind you, the tutus existed, they were just a bit...well...more structured, like a ballerina's beautiful frame encased in stiff layers of tulle! Imagine the layers, darling! Each tulle layer perfectly aligned, no room for a single feather or a rogue sparkly embellishment.
Can you imagine the hours those dear dancers spent getting ready? Not just the elaborate hair buns and glittering jewels, but also, just managing those layers of tulle! Oh, darling, let's just say that a light, billowy tulle cloud was far from what they were wearing. They needed all the strength in the world to move gracefully under such a glorious weight!
And now, let’s talk about my absolute favourite part about my recent journey… a chance encounter with a real, genuine ballet show! Yes, I know it might seem a little obvious, a time traveler seeing a ballet, but just picture it: gaslight illuminating the stage, an audience all decked out in fancy frocks and top hats, the sweet, nostalgic music from a string orchestra. Oh darling, my heart simply danced to the rhythm of the time!
But before I bore you with all the glitz and glamour of the show, let’s have a quick peep into this exciting date: 18th January 1876. This week’s news is all about...well... a rather dull one - political stuff, darling! Nothing as exciting as my gorgeous, sparkling tutus, that’s for sure. It seems, apparently, there was some political drama involving an "Earl of Derby" and “Sir William Harcourt" and the whole business involved “resignation" and "new Prime Ministers" oh yawn Boring, simply boring!
Thankfully, the day was far more entertaining on a different continent. If we jetted over to New York City this Tuesday, we would have discovered The National Academy of Design unveiling their annual exhibition! Imagine the bustle! All the artists displaying their finest works of art, everyone eager to discover the hottest art trends and most stunning paintings. It certainly makes this #TutuTuesday much more colourful, don't you think?
Speaking of colourful, my current time travel budget has allowed me to do a spot of splendid shopping for some exceptionally fabulous tulle - imagine the colour - bright pink, a touch of lavender, maybe even a bit of lime green for some eye-catching flair! I just adore finding pieces that bring back a touch of vintage charm and style, and it will definitely inspire some stunning designs for my next performance. You all know I love the flamboyant, the unique, and anything with a little sparkle!
But I have to say, there's truly something about ballet, a certain air of elegance that can't be copied. It’s magic in motion! And darling, this particular ballet was a true triumph of the grandiose! The stage, I swear it, sparkled with an abundance of glittering diamonds, glistening silver chandeliers, and such incredible costuming! I must say, the tutus themselves were pretty spectacular too - perhaps not the billowy lightness I’m used to, but so full of exquisite detail! Each layer of tulle, adorned with lavish embroidery, looked almost like intricate lace, every fold like a piece of a stunning work of art.
Now, imagine, darling, as the dancers perform these complicated choreographies under these magnificent costumes…it's unforgettable, absolutely breathtaking! I watched the whole show completely entranced, just picturing all of the beautiful steps and spins. Every single performance of this beautiful art form is like an intimate dance of grace, beauty, and sheer passion.
Well, my loves, it's getting late and I’m already off to my next extraordinary adventure, but before I go, do remember - a touch of pink, a sparkling tutu - there’s no better way to make an ordinary day absolutely spectacular! Don't forget to catch up with me next week for more #TutuTuesday adventures! Until then, darling, keep those twirls twirling and those smiles shining! Au revoir!
