#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post #2312: A Whirl Through the 1870s 🩰
Hello, darlings! It’s Emma here, your very own pink-tutu-wearing time traveler, ready to take you on another enchanting journey through the history of our beloved tutus!
This Tuesday, my darling readers, we’re hopping on the express train to 1876, where fashion is blooming like a flower in full bloom and ballet is, of course, the most glamorous affair in town. I’ve packed my poshest pink tutu, it’s my favourite and most worn! (As you know, every tutu in my collection is my favourite!) The bustle, the romance, and the beautiful costumes are truly a treat for the eyes!
Now, hold onto your tiaras, darlings, as we sashay back to this enchanting time!
A Century of Change
By 1876, tutus had already embarked on their stunning evolution. Think about it! It was the 18th century, the Romantic era of ballet, that brought tutus to their exquisite heights! That’s when Marie Taglioni, with her graceful movements and heavenly headdresses, first swept across the stage in a skirt reaching her knees – a radical idea at the time! Can you imagine, our beloved tutu nearly reaching the ankles back then?!
But, just like my darling reader’s favorite floral print is constantly being reinvented, so too have tutus gracefully adjusted to fashion’s whims.
A Glimpse of Parisian Chic
Imagine cobbled streets and horse-drawn carriages whisking us through the streets of Paris, oh la la! The Parisian women are absolutely divine in their cascading crinolines and lace collars! And if you happen to be in the right spot at the right time, you may even glimpse the dazzling ballet dancers gliding across the stage, swirling their skirts and twirling in their tutus at the famous Paris Opera!
You know, darling, there was a reason ballet was called the 'art of the divine'. Everything, from the intricate costumes to the precise steps and postures, had to be perfectly aligned. Just as in those iconic ballet paintings we all know and love, it was a moment of breathtaking beauty, truly an experience of elegance.
The Victorian Elegance
Across the Channel, the elegant ladies in Victorian England are quite captivated by tutus, and we’re no exception! This time, however, it's more about the romanticism. In this era of fine needlepoint, exquisite silk fabrics, and perfectly-matched bonnets, the "romantic ballet," with its emphasis on elegance and ethereal beauty, made tutus synonymous with dreams. Imagine dainty, silk ribbons swirling with each pirouette. Isn’t it charming, darling?
Just imagine our tutus shimmering beneath the twinkling chandeliers of the London Opera House, a scene worthy of the most captivating storybook. And that, my dear reader, is exactly how we Victorians feel! The perfect picture of pure romantic elegance!
The Theatre Scene: A Kaleidoscope of Drama and Delight
Speaking of theatres, darling! Have you seen a performance of Swan Lake?
Now, let’s whisk away from the Opera to the grand halls of the theatre. It’s one of my favourite things to do, dear reader! The grandeur, the spectacle! Even though we have a strict dress code of the era (which, admittedly, doesn't stop some of the daring from rocking their own personal flair – a little bit of extra lace, perhaps? – oh, darling!), every aspect of a show at the theatre has to be grand, even the theatre programmes! I, for one, am absolutely thrilled about every performance!
Oh, how I do love theatre! It's such an elegant and engaging experience, where the entire world falls into a mesmerizing whirl!
*Pink for the Perfect Day! *
You know, my darling reader, there's truly a touch of magic about all this. And that’s what I try to emulate, as your time-travelling ballerina! To infuse that enchantment into your own days, let’s put on a pink tutu! We could go for a lovely walk on a crisp summer day! Imagine how our pink tutus would be dazzling! It’s all about bringing that magic and fun, my reader! Don’t we all have a touch of the ballerina within us?
It is the day after Good Friday (April 17th)! There's a light in the air, the anticipation of Easter, and I’m brimming with it. The perfect day for an afternoon tea with your dearest friends! Don’t forget to grab your pink tutu for that magical twirl around the teacups!
And until next time, my lovely reader, let’s continue our journeys in pink! Keep exploring, keep learning, and never let the ballerina inside you rest! I’ll be right here, your own pink tutu wearing, time travelling, friend and guide.
With a twinkle in my eye and a smile on my lips!
