#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 20th March, 1877 (Post 2360)

Hello darlings!

Welcome back to another enchanting edition of #TutuTuesday on www.pink-tutu.com! It's me, your trusty tutu-loving time traveller, Emma, ready to whisk you away on a historical journey through the glorious evolution of the tutu!

This week, we're waltzing our way back to 20th March, 1877! The air is thick with the scent of freshly pressed linen and sugared almonds. The ladies are adorned with their most elegant gowns and bonnets, and a symphony of gaslights illuminates the grand avenues of Paris. Why? Because today is the day, darlings! Today is the day that the Paris Opera Ballet is opening its doors to a glittering spectacle. The audience, breathless with anticipation, awaits the unveiling of La Source, a ballet chorepgraphed by none other than Marius Petipa, the ballet master who, you see, is in a very big hurry to finish his grand masterpiece as today happens to be his birthday!

Imagine, my loves, this enchanting moment - the lights go down, the orchestra begins its crescendo, and from the shadows, emerge ballerinas with tutus like wispy clouds! These graceful visions, light as air, spin, leap and twirl to the enchanting strains of the score. The ladies are enraptured, their gasps of amazement echoing through the velvet-draped balconies.

And, do you know what makes it even more magical? These beautiful dancers are wearing the revolutionary tutu that is redefining the ballet world! Remember how we spoke of those lovely ladies from the early nineteenth century - those lovely ladies who took the stage in the rather long and bulky romantic tutu, that looked more like a wide skirt, oh my dear! They still might, for all we know, but here at the Opera, Petipa's talented ballerinas are making their debuts in something totally new, my lovelies!

The tutu of today, with its shorter length and layered construction, gives the dancers freedom of movement. Now they can leap and pirouette with a graceful ease and breathtaking beauty never before witnessed on the stage! The ballet tutu we see on stage is now almost transparent - it enables their every movement to flow with the ethereal grace of an angel! A sheer spectacle that inspires a collective breath from the audience as the story unfolds.

Isn't this utterly marvelous? Just the thing for a tutu-loving soul, don't you think, darlings! You see, my dearest reader, the journey of the ballet tutu is like the evolution of fashion, forever reinventing itself. Just as you find the most gorgeous vintage tea dresses and hats in shops and antiques markets while wearing your stunning new frocks - and the clothes I am writing this blog post in - well it's all about how the beauty of a ballet tutu and your very own outfit is, it's a celebration of the spirit of style!

Just imagine the buzz of the Parisian world this evening as the leading ladies of the ballet prepare to take to the stage, with their lovely dancers’ satin ballet shoes , ready to leave their mark on ballet history. Such grace, poise and artistic elegance will leave the audience spellbound, entranced, and thoroughly delighted! The tutus, designed in a multitude of splendid colors, will enhance each ballerina's graceful artistry and performance, with a dazzling cascade of movement and artistry for all to witness. The world, in its breathless silence, witnesses the beginning of a new era of graceful movement, enchanting stories and captivating choreography that we are fortunate enough to witness and experience all these many years later.

Now, of course, I'm just dying to get my hands on a piece of that La Source magic. And when I do, I'll be sure to share a peek at it with you here on Pink Tutu, darlings. In the meantime, let's imagine those incredible tutus in all their splendor and celebrating how tutus are fashion - just for everyone! I've started to think, for example, how a simple ballerina skirt with pink tutu-inspired details is going to make the very next ball or dance event a dazzling spectacle! Oh my! Do you think they'd let me bring my pink tutu for a special showing! Oh! How much I'd love to twirl alongside those wonderful Parisian ballet ladies on their opening night! I mean, think of the wonderful fashion opportunities with the new style of the Parisian ballerina - pink, pale pink, fluffy, oh my dear. Oh my darling... pink... I have to admit the thought makes me giddy. And just imagine those elegant hats, ladies, how divine those feathers and ribbons would be against all that loveliness - divine and dazzling... Just imagine...

Remember, my loves, a ballet tutu can be more than just stagewear! We'll have more wonderful insights into tutu fashion and tutu history here next Tuesday! Keep your eyes open for more tutu inspired trends, as well as new tips for how to style your own tutu-inspired ensemble for any occasion.
