#TutuTuesday: A Pink History of the Tutu – 16th October 1877 - Blog Post No. 2390!

Bonjour, chères lectrices, and welcome to another fabulous #TutuTuesday! It's Emma here, your ever-so-slightly-obsessed pink tutu aficionado, coming to you live from a gloriously sunny Parisian park. The air is filled with the sounds of birdsong and laughter, and let me tell you, I feel as light and free as a feather!

Today, we're whisked back in time to the 16th of October, 1877. Now, that's quite a while back, my dears. Can you even imagine a world without Instagram for fashion inspiration? 🤯 But, trust me, the ballet world was still thriving then, and oh my, those ballerinas were nothing short of sensational! They're the reason we have the beautiful, whimsical tutus we know and love today, and guess what? They had some fabulous colours going on! 💖

Now, imagine you're strolling down the Champs-Élysées, the Parisian sun glinting off your most elegant bonnets. And there, glittering in the distance, you see the Palais Garnier. Can you picture it, my loves? It’s positively grand! Imagine yourself gliding into this elegant world of exquisite performances and swirling tutus, an absolute symphony of graceful movements and glorious costumes. 🩰

It's the era of the Romantic ballet, darlings. The ballet style, I mean. We’re talking ethereal beings flitting across the stage, soft melodies floating in the air, and oh, such delicate beauty in every turn and jump. Just think, dear readers, that you’d get to watch the greatest ballerinas of the day like Carlotta Grisi or Fanny Cerrito! These elegant dancers were absolute legends! Every show was a whirlwind of exquisite tutus, and they’d practically fly through the air, a visual delight.

Now, back to that colour, dear ones. This era of ballet, with its light and ethereal feel, adored a certain delicate hue, a colour that echoed that airy lightness and ethereal beauty: pink! 💖 It wasn't just for frills and fancies either, although it did look positively fabulous in frills, my darlings. It was a symbol of refinement, grace, and femininity. All qualities we adore here in the realm of ballet, of course!

You'll find all sorts of delightful stories of dancers wearing these dreamy pink creations – some more flamboyant, others delicately simple, depending on the show, my dear.

Think about the delicate, swirling tulle of Marie Taglioni’s iconic pink tutu in La Sylphide, so light and airy it was practically a cloud of colour. It practically stole the show and became a legendary moment in ballet history, and my, my, it started a huge trend.

There was so much passion for these lovely tutus. In 1877, there would be so much to talk about! 🩰 Can you just imagine all those fabulous gossip sessions? It was a whirlwind of what to wear, who was wearing the prettiest, who had the most *stylish moves…. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall in those conversations! It would have been utterly fabulous, with ladies discussing everything from the colour of their *promenade shoes to the elegance of their bonnets, while waiting excitedly for the curtains to rise and witness the wonders of the Parisian Opera Ballet. ✨

Of course, even way back then, a love of the pink tutu went beyond the ballet stage. It seeped into every aspect of a stylish lady's life. Imagine delicate, pink ribbons woven into beautiful bonnets or elegant pink gloves accompanying their outfits. 👒🧤 Think of tea gowns in beautiful pink hues, adorned with exquisite embroidery. A splash of pink could be found on just about every item of a fashionable Parisian’s wardrobe. It was practically the must-have colour!

But it's important to remember, my lovely tutu enthusiasts, a true pink tutu aficionado doesn’t just wear pink – she lives pink. The vibrancy of this color is about more than just outward appearance, my darlings. It’s about expressing yourself and living life with a joyful energy. So, remember, if you are feeling down, don’t forget, a dash of pink can change your whole outlook. A splash of color can bring in a fresh breeze and remind you to enjoy the joy of the simple things in life. Just like we do with these tutus, my darlings. Just look at it. Doesn't it make your heart flutter? 💖

Well, my dears, the journey through time is done, and it’s back to the reality of our lives. Time to go find a cup of tea, I think. ☕ It’s always lovely to see my dearest friends, but oh, this trip had my little head swirling with excitement.

Don't forget, my darlings, I will see you again next week, and we'll explore the fabulous pink world of ballet in all its glorious history.

Keep your twirls high, your spirits bright, and your love of tutus blooming,

Your pink tutu devotee,

Emma
