#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: The Story of a Wonderful Christmas Gift! (Post #2400)

Greetings, my dearest tutu-lovers! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina, back for another TutuTuesday adventure!

Today, we’re whisking ourselves back in time to the 25th of December, 1877. The air is crisp, and snowflakes are swirling outside – perfect for a cosy Christmas Day at home. However, as you know, we can’t resist a little time-travel exploration, so let's see what fashion magic is unfolding in the world of ballet this Christmas Day!

It's December and we're right in the middle of the most wonderful ballet season! Christmas lights are twinkling across Paris, London and New York, bringing an air of festive magic.

Can you imagine opening up your stockings to find a brand new tutu, perfect for pirouetting across your sitting room? It's a dream come true! Now imagine gifting a shimmering pink tutu to your daughter - such a wonderfully imaginative Christmas present.

Back in 1877, the tutu wasn't quite the fashion statement it is today. The shorter, frilly tutu – that we all know and love – wasn't really commonplace just yet! It was an exciting, new kind of ballerina garment that was changing the world of dance. Think long, sweeping skirts, full of graceful layers and tulle, designed for grand ballets with flowing and elaborate moves. A true ballerina fairytale!

Imagine the joy and excitement that a ballerina would feel twirling in her new Christmas tutu! This would truly be the most wonderful gift!

This Christmas Day, I was whisked away on my travels by train to St Petersburg. A majestic journey across continents, and an unforgettable glimpse into a rich ballet history.

This Christmas in St Petersburg, everyone is flocking to see the most captivating performances of the Russian Ballet. The dancing is exquisite, and the stage costumes are something special! The ladies of the ballet are swirling around in flowing, dramatic tutus, and everyone in the audience is entranced by the skill and artistry. It's truly magical!

It’s been an absolute treat to explore the historical side of the tutu, discovering the fascinating evolution of this magical piece of ballet wear. From the long flowing tutus of 1877, to the more streamlined designs we know and love today, it’s amazing to see how it has transformed to capture the spirit and the energy of the dancer!

We might not have a traditional, modern-style tutu this Christmas Day in 1877, but there are still incredible displays of femininity, elegance, and artistry. And that’s something to celebrate, especially when it comes to ballet, and #TutuTuesday.

Oh, did you know, my darling readers, that I even gave a special Christmas Eve ballet performance to the royal family. It was quite a special occasion for me - my favourite costume is, of course, a glorious pink tutu!

Right, it's getting dark in London now. But it's been wonderful taking this trip to a fabulous Christmas Day in 1877. I’m already getting excited about our next #TutuTuesday journey. Make sure you join me next week, as we travel to a new ballet era, and discover what wonderful fashions the next TutuTuesday has in store for us.

Don’t forget, let me know in the comments what era you would like to travel back to! And if you want to be featured in a future #TutuTuesday post, send a photo of you in your most fabulous pink tutu!

Love always, Emma, your Time-Traveling Tutu Fairy.

Remember, a little bit of pink can go a long way! ✨
