#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1878-09-17 (Post #2438)

Hello my darling dears! Welcome back to another week of Tutu Tuesday on www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutus and ballet history! As a fellow tutus enthusiast, you'll be just as excited as I am to delve into another slice of time and learn all about our beloved dancewear's past!

Today, we’re taking a trip back in time to a truly special date: 17th September, 1878! It's almost too exciting to bear! Honestly, darlings, this era was truly the height of fashion for the tutu - and as we all know, the tutu is practically a dress code for any proper ballet fan! I’ve always said: when in doubt, tutus out! And, goodness knows, tutus were certainly out in 1878, my dears.

For you see, 1878 saw some truly magnificent ballet performances, which meant equally magnificent tutus! And this year's gem of the season was the debut of a new version of the La Bayadère ballet! Just the mention of those feather-light tulle layers sends shivers down my spine! It was at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, my lovelies, a grand setting fit for such an incredible event! The very thought of it is enough to make me want to spin a tour en l’air myself, wouldn’t you agree?

Of course, my darling, I always do my research! Just for you, I’ve even procured a perfectly pink, vintage picture postcard from a little shop on my latest escapade through the French countryside (did you know I adore trains, dearies? All those pretty carriage windows and delicious smells! And no airport queues! Heavenly!) anyway, this gorgeous card depicts the very ballerina who brought La Bayadère to life! Isn't she just divine?

I just love how delicate those bouquets are, darlings - a cascade of lace and ribbon perfectly accented by those delightful bows around the hips! My own taste runs a little towards the larger bows, my dears! The bigger, the better I always say, but really, each of us has her own preference. The important thing is expression. Just as ballet demands you put your heart and soul into each movement, the tutu too demands we wear it with our hearts truly set ablaze. We are dancers, my loves, and let us never forget it!

Of course, 1878 was a time of unimaginable social change and a vast upheaval for ballet itself. And just as those brave ballerinas revolutionised movement and style on stage, so too we are revolutionising the everyday! It’s time, darlings, to take that brave first step (quite literally) and embrace the joy of wearing a tutu, any day of the week, at any moment, in any situation! It’s time to live a life as elegant and fluid as a dancer, and make that grand finale for your style a real triumph. It’s time for every one of you, my darling loves, to embrace the Tutu Revolution!

Now, off to a private ballet class - oh, how I do love ballet class! and of course, a little shopping for a pink feather boa to adorn my tutu, naturally! Oh, the adventures we’ll have in tutus!

Stay beautifully inspired, Emma

Of course, that's just a glimpse of the vibrant world of 1878 ballet, darlings. To delve deeper, let's explore this year and discover what makes it so unique!

1. The Rise of the Classical Ballet:

As we head back to 1878, classical ballet was entering a new era of rebirth after a period of romanticism and fluidity. The graceful movements and strict training methods we cherish today had a lot to do with groundbreaking work done at the end of the 19th Century! A pivotal point for the tutus themselves, as less embellishments and more attention was given to the form of the garment.

Remember, darlings, our tutu styles may have evolved, but never forgotten the basic foundations: grace, elegance and, *of course, style! *

2. La Bayadère:

Remember that amazing postcard, my dears? The original ballet La Bayadère first premiered in 1877 in Saint Petersburg! And just a short year later, a re-envisioned version debuts in 1878 at the Bolshoi Theatre! The ballet is truly an epic tale, packed with emotional power and stunning performances!

But, what makes it especially noteworthy for our Tutu Tuesdays?

It’s the sheer splendour of those tutus! Picture this, darlings: delicate layers of white tulle billowing in the breeze as the dancers glide across the stage. It’s simply breathtaking. It’s like a scene out of a fairytale, filled with magical dreams.

3. Fashion Trends & Ballet:

1878 saw the emergence of fashion trends that influences ballet more than we realise. And it all revolves around the concept of elegance. A slim-fitting, feminine figure became a major style. In many ways, this can be seen in early ballet garments!

4. A Time of Change:

Just like how fashion trends flow and transform through time, the tutu too evolved into a masterpiece that blended classical movements with grace and elegance, becoming a central part of the performance itself! It became more than just a garment! Think of it as a blank canvas transformed into an artist’s masterpiece with every pirouette!

And this, my darlings, is just the beginning! It’s time to start a passion for history through the lens of a pink tutu. Stay tuned, dearies. There’s so much more to discover!
