#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: A Pink Delight (1879-08-12) 🩰💕

Welcome back to my beloved Pink-Tutu.com, darlings! It’s Tuesday, which means it's time for another fabulous voyage through the captivating history of the tutu. I'm Emma, your time-travelling ballerina, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be back with you today! It’s like a whirlwind of pink tulle and sparkly tiaras - how I love it!

This week, our journey takes us all the way back to 12th August 1879, a date that holds a special significance in ballet history, albeit not a date of major tutu developments! I must say, however, the thought of a time machine whirring to this time fills me with excitement, like the flutter in my stomach as I step onto the stage for my first pirouette. My travelling ensemble is a delightful, oh-so-feminine blush pink, tulle tutu, and I can’t wait to see the outfits and hairstyles they are sporting in 1879! My darling pink feather boa and top hat are ready to meet the fashions of this age, even though, to be honest, a little less sparkle will likely be required on this trip. It’s all about finding the right blend of historical charm and fabulous pink flair, isn't it?

So, you're probably thinking: “Emma, why are we going to 1879?” This date holds a rather unusual, albeit important historical landmark: it marks the birthday of our very own ballerina royalty: Anna Pavlova.

Pavlova, as everyone knows, was the queen of graceful, elegant movement. Oh, how I could swoon over her on stage, all feather boas and light, airy tutus! I’m just going to pretend I can imagine a tutu fit for Pavlova... in pink, of course, to be extra fabulous! 💕 Her brilliance and charm made her a superstar!

It’s actually a funny thought, my friends. You see, if I’d been born in that period, I’d most likely have dreamed of joining her famous company. What a glorious dream! I imagine I’d have been swept off my feet, pirouetting my way to stardom with Pavlova's famous ballets - and that pink tulle? I’d be wearing it all the way! Imagine the delight! But darling, you know me! I’m all about looking back and reflecting - how we've arrived at the fabulous tutu designs we see on stage today.

Today's journey into the world of ballet history reminds us that fashion is an ever-evolving tapestry woven from creativity and artistry. The legacy of pioneers like Pavlova reminds us of the artistry and dedication needed to create ballet as we know it. Just a whisper of history shows us the important link between elegance, tradition, and the captivating story of the tutu.

Tutu History: A Trip Back to 1879:

To put 1879 into context, think long skirts, bustles, and frills. The Victorians, with their love of lace, flowers, and delicate frills, were reigning in the fashion world. So imagine me in my pink tutu, the perfect pink exclamation point, in the middle of all that fussiness. Now that is a sight to see!

Now, let's rewind to that delightful year of 1879... it's a time when ballet is experiencing a remarkable evolution. I can just picture the grandeur of those ballet houses - with a chandelier or two for good measure! It’s time for our favourite question: What did they wear then?

We are still in the era of the Romantic tutu, so think fluffy layers of tulle with a short, rather wide shape, giving it a grand and ethereal look. It was very different from the sleek and streamlined tutus that we adore today, but I must say, those Romantics knew how to put a beautiful statement on stage!

The tutu in 1879 was an explosion of elegance, flowing tulle, and delicate floral details, all creating an air of delicate fairytale. I would have worn a beautiful rose-pink one to match that era. It's like something from a dream! Perhaps they could learn something about bright, vibrant colour choices from my personal style book?

The tutu was, of course, a sign of that beautiful grace, symbolizing the dancers as whimsical, airy fairies, and in this period, that fairytale romanticism in design extended even to the colours! The favourite shade, you see, was the delicate shade of a sunset - which would make you think a delicate salmon or peach colour, wouldn’t it? Just think, I could bring back my favourite pink - that would cause a right stir back in those days, oh my!

So, when we're looking back to this year of 1879, let's remember, this was a time of incredible change. Think beautiful ballet stories, breathtaking dances, and tutus of romantic, delicate designs. They did all those leaps and jumps with so little, didn’t they? It’s all about beautiful grace, darling. I can't wait to see how things unfold as we continue on our #TutuTuesday journey!

Do join me next week, and we'll be back on 19th August 1879, because every week we take another peek back in history. I have a little feeling next week we may be exploring the romanticism of the Romantics! You don’t want to miss that. Until next time, my darlings! Remember: Keep it pink, keep it pretty, and keep the love of the tutu alive! 💕
