#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1879-09-16!

Blog Post Number 2490

Hello my darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite tutu-loving time traveller, and welcome to another fabulous edition of #TutuTuesday! I’m currently on a rather thrilling train journey to Paris - oh how I love the romance of rail travel. Just me, a suitcase brimming with the most delightful pink frills, and my trusty pink tutu of course!

As you all know, Paris is THE city for tutus, wouldn't you say? Especially this week! The Opera Garnier is bursting at the seams with beautiful people all in their finery! And with that stunning grand staircase – oh, I’m simply dreaming in pink tulle! But you already know my heart is with the dance, darling. Today, we are delving into a history of the ballet tutu – a fascinating topic indeed!

Let's travel back in time!

Today we’re on a fascinating voyage back to 1879, and let me tell you, dear readers, there were already some major style developments on the tutu front. Imagine, the ballerina as a creature of exquisite beauty and grace - floating through the air, arms outstretched, swirling her frilled skirt… how utterly captivating! And these glorious tutus, well they weren't the wispy wonders we see today! They were a statement piece, let me tell you! Long, romantic and quite the grand entrance, even from afar.

Think full-length gowns of silk and tulle - like billowing clouds of dreams and fantasy. Layers and layers, my dears, each shimmering under the gaslight with tiny beads and glitter. Imagine all the possibilities – white silk with a sprinkle of diamante, pink chiffon with ribbons, even layers of lace over the tulle! These were tutus designed to draw attention - the ultimate feminine power, the symbol of the ballerina.

What a Wonderful World: 1879!

Right here, on 16th September 1879, there was such a magical world happening in the Paris Opera! Just last week, I had the pleasure of seeing “Giselle”, and you simply can’t imagine, my loves, how exquisitely the dancers looked! I just fell in love with the story too – the power of love, sacrifice and of course… a little bit of tragedy. How could one not get caught up in all the emotions? I'd bet my newest pair of pink pumps (that I'll post pictures of later) that you are already reaching for the tissues right now, my lovelies!

My dear reader, remember: a ballet isn’t just a show – it's an experience! So next time you find yourself at a performance – even if it's a smaller, intimate theatre - give in to the music, lose yourself in the steps, let the passion wash over you. Just let it all flow, darling. Let's not forget that it is through their passion and dedication that dancers inspire so many! It's not just the gorgeous, dramatic gowns, but their hard work and commitment – an undeniable force that drives them, pushes them forward.

A Bit of Gossip for You, my darlings!

Did you know that these long, flowing tutus of the past became increasingly in vogue in the social circles of Europe! They began popping up in ladies’ balls and even everyday wear - just think, a romantic, billowing cloud of tulle waltzing in the boudoir!

Just a little reminder, my dear reader: never be afraid to express your creativity, your style, and even just a dash of sparkle in your everyday life! Don’t let yourself be tied down by the constraints of any time! As for me? I am off on a journey through time, spreading a little pink sparkle where ever I go! Don't forget to join me on Instagram and keep an eye on this space for another dose of #TutuTuesday next week, same time, same place!
