#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1880-10-05 - A Dance Back in Time! 🩰
Hello my gorgeous ballet bunnies! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, dedicated to all things tutus. 🎀 This week on #TutuTuesday, we're stepping back in time, all the way to the 5th of October, 1880. Can you believe it's been almost 150 years?
I'm Emma, your time-traveling tutu-loving blogger from Derbyshire. As you know, I'm obsessed with tutus and all things ballet. And just like you, I love a bit of history - so join me on this journey to the glorious past where ballet is queen! 👑
As I always say, a girl can't travel back in time without the right outfit! So naturally, I’ve donned a stunning pink tutu, as pink is simply the most glorious colour imaginable. ✨ It's so bouncy and fun, and perfectly encapsulates the essence of ballet! You'll see it all over the streets of Paris this week, and believe me, Paris is where the magic happens! 🗼
Let's take a peek at what was happening on the 5th of October, 1880, in the magical realm of ballet!
This is my 2545th post! Can you imagine that? I've been doing #TutuTuesday since... well, since forever! 😅 I'm so grateful to share my passion with all of you lovely people, and it's all thanks to your unwavering support! You’re simply the best! ❤️
On this day in 1880, the iconic La Bayadère ballet by Marius Petipa was being performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It's a dazzling display of intricate choreography, powerful storytelling, and of course, the most incredible tutus you could possibly imagine! It's hard to believe this timeless classic was only a little over 20 years old at this time! 🤩
But let's talk about the Tutus! Can you believe, the La Bayadère costumes are so different than what we see on stage today? The skirts were long, they actually touched the ground! They were adorned with intricate layers of silk, giving the ballerinas a majestic, almost ethereal quality. ✨ They also featured intricate embellishments – think flowers, jewels, and feathers! Now that’s what I call glamorous! 💖
Imagine waltzing across the stage in such an extravagant costume! It's no wonder that La Bayadère remains a cherished part of the ballet world, and the costumes, just like those wonderful, wonderful tutus, are part of the magic!
Now, imagine you are a dancer in Paris. What would you do? Of course you'd be enjoying the chicest shopping on Rue de la Paix, stopping by the charming boutiques, checking out the latest styles and newest creations from Worth and Doucet. I bet those incredible gowns they’re creating for the opera, and for the wealthy Parisians, are just dying to be seen on a ballet stage. We're talking yards and yards of silks and lace and those breathtaking, unforgettable embellishments! 💃
Then, when you are feeling exhausted after all that shopping, take a breather with a stroll through the Tuileries Garden and indulge in a spot of tea, or a pastry in one of the charming cafes, and imagine yourself gliding across the stage with that stunning tutu dancing with the divine Marius Petipa.
As for myself, I’m just hopping onto the train, my little pink tutu in tow, to head back to the year 2023 and share my latest Tutu-Time adventure with all of you! 🚂
Let me know in the comments – what’s your favorite tutu moment from La Bayadère? And remember, never forget the magic of a tutu, even if you're only dancing in your own living room. 💖
Until next #TutuTuesday,
Emma 🩰
