#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: December 14th, 1880 - The Dance of Progress!

Hello darlings!

Welcome back to another edition of #TutuTuesday! This week we're twirling back to December 14th, 1880, a truly enchanting time in the history of dance, my fellow tutophiles. As always, I'm your host, Emma, bringing you the latest and most fabulous news on our beloved tulle creation, from the heart of Paris.

This Tuesday, let's celebrate the beautiful progression of ballet and fashion together. December 14th, 1880, might not seem like a particularly significant date in history. No grand battles or groundbreaking discoveries… but oh, darlings, in the world of ballet, this was a momentous occasion! It was the very date that the famous Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova, was born.

You might think it’s funny, but you know what? We all have so much to thank Miss Pavlova for. She truly brought a breath of fresh air to the stage. Now, I know this is getting slightly scandalous, but we must all admit that the ballet world was slightly, shall we say, stiff in the 1880s. Imagine dancers standing upright, their movements so strict! It was almost robotic, wouldn’t you say? Well, dear Pavlova, bless her heart, brought a new wave of light, graceful, and lyrical style to ballet. We are all blessed by her revolutionary technique and passion. Oh, what a delight!

But wait, darling, you're thinking, how does this relate to our darling tutus?

You're right to be curious! Now, it wouldn’t be entirely true to say the ballet skirt had not already embraced romantic movement and elegant styling in 1880. But Pavlova, you see, she changed the very spirit of dance. She championed this new form of artistic expression, moving the ballet skirt to embrace movement rather than simply remain stationary and stiff. We can’t help but think that she helped push ballet fashion in new directions – we may not have had the very very first true ballerina tutu, but Pavlova certainly pushed us on that path.

The Paris Buzz: Tutues Everywhere

Oh darling, let's be honest, in Paris the world is always buzzing with something wonderful. The 1880s saw an exciting flurry of activity in fashion, including new creations for the ballet stage, but also on the streets! Think delicate fabrics, ruffles, bonnets and everything delightfully romantic, my dears! It's no surprise then that the very essence of dance was felt all over Paris. I could not help myself, but I hopped right off the train from my Derbyshire home to go straight to see an incredible production at the Grand Opera, even purchasing some stunning little Parisian lace trimmings for my own tutus (they go splendidly with my pink velvet boots! My goodness, do you ever try a trip to La Samaritaine, it is heaven on earth for fabric and ribbons, oh darling! Truly!).

It’s impossible to resist such delightful fabric in any city but Paris is especially enchanting for a trip focused on tulle! I'm actually wearing my latest, a darling little pale pink tutu with delicate ribbons and embroidered flowers, perfect for a stroll down the Champs-Élysées or perhaps a tête-à-tête at a Parisian cafe, sipping coffee while soaking up the sunshine, naturally.

Looking to the Future

The stage has a long, vibrant future, my dear readers, and it will become even more thrilling and full of exciting surprises as the new century comes along! Who knows what exciting adventures are to come for our favourite piece of fabric, the ballet skirt, I'm absolutely enthralled by what the future holds for our dance! Now if you’ll excuse me darling, I have an exciting new pair of pink shoes to try on (that most beautifully detailed pink ballet shoe, truly it's heaven! It came with an absolutely adorable ribbon!) Oh, darling, how splendid! Now don’t forget to keep your eye on this space for the next edition of #TutuTuesday on the wonderful www.pink-tutu.com !
