#TutuTuesday: A Trip Back in Time to 1881! (Post #2570)

Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, Emma, back with another installment of my beloved #TutuTuesday! Today we're jetting back to March 29th, 1881, and trust me, you won't believe the tutu fashion we're about to uncover.

A Trip on the Orient Express (And A Little Ballet)

You know I adore train journeys – they’re so romantic and allow you to soak in the scenery, particularly when wearing a fabulous tutu! So for my trip back to 1881, I decided to take a whirl on the Orient Express, a glamorous and elegant train travelling right through Europe! Now, picture this – a stunning train, a delicate, pink tutu swirling as I glide through the corridors, a silver tiara catching the light from the sunbeams peeking through the carriage windows, and the melodic, lilting strains of a classical tune I’d heard earlier in Paris...it was utterly divine!

Speaking of Paris, darling, it was my first stop, as it truly is the beating heart of all things fashion and fabulous. And of course, it was the centre of ballet, where my beautiful pink tutu drew many a curious glance!

A Peek into 1881 Ballet

You know, the tutu is as timeless as it gets! Imagine my delight when I found out it was actually starting to become quite popular in the 1880s. The designs then were all about intricate details and lavish layers, perfect for showcasing the dancers’ artistry and grace. The ladies of that era were embracing longer, flowing tutus with layers upon layers of tulle. It was all so delicate, with delicate little lace flowers or embellishments added, it was a true art form. They’d add a touch of sparkle too, perhaps with sequins or beads. Think classic, refined elegance. Oh darling, I could just see myself in one of those gorgeous numbers! It would make a truly breathtaking piece for my repertoire.

Oh, and let’s not forget the wonderful performers of that era! The ballet world was already abuzz with legends like Marie Taglioni and Fanny Elssler – pioneers of their time. They pushed the boundaries with their artistry and captivating performances, creating truly remarkable experiences that echoed through history. They would have had such an elegant presence in those tutus – like shimmering swans.

A Night at the Opera

So what's on this very day, March 29th, 1881, that's worthy of our #TutuTuesday exploration? Well, ladies and gentlemen, I managed to snag myself a coveted ticket for a performance at the Opera House in Paris! Now, imagine the scene – I'm there in my magnificent pink tutu, the scent of flowers lingering in the air, the warm golden glow of the stage, the rustle of silken dresses... truly a moment to remember.

Tonight's show features a stunning production of "Giselle," which premiered back in 1841 and became an absolute sensation! I've seen the video footage (via my trusty time travel technology, of course!), and it's absolutely mesmerizing. I can practically feel the emotions pouring out of every graceful step and elegant move, every flutter of the tulle! They say there's magic in these ballerinas, and oh my, it's true.

And don't you know it, dear readers? The "Giselle" costumes include an array of breathtaking tutus! Think delicate, billowing layers of white tulle, flowing to and fro as the ballerinas danced. Such romanticism and artistry! The elegance was unmatched, just like the stories that were woven through each ballet move.

A Few Tips for Today’s Fashionistas:

While the style of tutus has certainly evolved since 1881, there are some tips we can all learn from the fashion of that era.

  • Delicate details: Remember that tiny touch of lace or delicate embellishment that really elevates a look? That was a trademark of the 1880s! Whether it's a floral appliqué on a ballet skirt or a charming little brooch, always add a touch of personality.
  • Embrace the layers: Who doesn't love a luxurious layer of tulle? Layering in general is still a super trend. Experiment with flowy skirts, beautiful lace or light chiffon for a touch of 1880s inspiration.
  • Don't forget the tiara! Okay, I know this one might not be for everyone, but hey, who wouldn't want a little bit of extra sparkle and shine, right? A sparkly tiara can elevate your outfit, like the delicate headpieces they wore in 1881, for a whimsical touch.
  • The Ballet Inspiration: It’s time to head down to your local ballet studio. Trust me, it will get you feeling inspired to wear all things tulle, floaty, and feminine.

And my dears, remember, there’s no reason why you can't bring the spirit of the 1880s tutu into your life, even if it's not March 29th!

So get out there, try on some beautiful new skirts, add a touch of lace, and find a way to feel your most magnificent self, even if you can’t travel through time yourself. And remember, pink tutus forever!
