#TutuTuesday: A Peek into 1881 โ A Time When the Tutu Wasn't Quite so "Tutu-tiful"
Post #2591: Welcome, darlings, to another dazzling #TutuTuesday! I'm your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, and I'm so excited to share another exciting journey through the world of the ballet.
Today we're stepping back to the 23rd of August, 1881, a time when the ballet scene was evolving rapidly, but tutus hadn't quite reached the glorious pink fluffy perfection we see today.
Now, if you've ever seen the graceful ballerinas swirling on stage, you might think they've always had their gorgeous tutus. But back in the 1880s, tutus were very different!
Imagine, my darlings, a long, heavy skirt, maybe even with some lace, which meant that our darling ballerinas could hardly move! They certainly weren't swirling or leaping about in those, no sir!
But don't despair! It was around this time that the shorter, more airy tutu โ the one we recognise today โ began to appear on stages in Paris, that wonderful city of light, fashion, and culture.
Oh, how I wish I could have been in Paris on this day! Just picture it, ladies: The cobblestone streets, the vibrant energy of the city, the elegant ladies with their delicate hats, and the scent of fresh croissants floating in the air โ heavenly!
Of course, what I'd be really excited for was a chance to see the ballet! Paris has always been a centre of fashion, and even back in the 1880s, there would have been beautiful gowns and even the very beginnings of tutus for the ballerinas.
However, the design of these tutus still focused more on elongating and covering the body. The idea was to give the dancers an ethereal and flowing appearance. It wouldn't be until a bit later that tutus became truly about showing off those beautiful legs, ready to soar across the stage.
While 1881 might not have seen the dramatic tutu revolution we all know and love, it was a time of wonderful innovation. You could see in Paris a passion for art and creativity. Just think โ what kind of clothes they would wear in that glorious Parisian ballet!
And I'm sure they'd be all over this #TutuTuesday post!
I must tell you all โ the thought of stepping back in time to catch a ballet performance in 1881 excites me. Imagine โ seeing the dancers, their elegant movements, their beautiful, flowing tutus, even if they aren't the frothy, pink cloud tutus we love.
The thing is, darlings, every era has its own style and grace. While 1881 wasn't the tutu era, it was the start of something truly fabulous. We may be wearing different tutus now, but our passion for the ballet, for elegance, and for showcasing grace is the same.
I imagine I'd probably wear my pink tulle tutu and an elegant feathered hat, perhaps with some gorgeous gloves, of course. And then, for the day's main event โ the ballet! I'd need a long and glamorous train flowing behind me. Imagine how excited the Parisian ladies would be to see me in all my pink and fluffy glory!
If I could travel back in time to 1881, I'd love to take you all along for the ride!
