Tutu Tuesday #2593: A Peek Into Ballet History, 1881

Hello my dearest tutu lovers! Emma here, ready to whisk you back in time for our weekly dose of Tutu Tuesday! Today, we're stepping into the world of ballet in the year 1881 - get ready to be dazzled!

Now, you know I adore my pink tutu - it’s the ultimate symbol of femininity and grace! And let me tell you, darling, it wouldn't exist without the evolution of the ballet tutu! Today we’re going back in time to 1881 - just a mere 30 years after the first tutu made its debut on stage. Can you imagine ballet without these whimsical creations?

Remember how we traveled by train last time, I even wore my best pink satin travelling dress with a dainty pink floral hat? It's just like a magical fairy tale to time-travel, and it allows me to see how the tutu has changed over time, just as we do! You see darling, it's more than just a costume, it's a story of artistry and evolution, and it's quite exciting. I've actually been travelling back and forth quite a bit. I mean who could resist all this pink fluff!

This week I've ended up in Paris, darling. Yes Paris - it's truly the capital of fashion! Even in 1881 the people are quite lovely, I met the most exquisite ladies dressed in stylish corsets and ruffled skirts. They simply adore the ballet - just like us! And I had a most exciting time at the Opera, where they put on a very fine production of Giselle. I absolutely adored the ballerinas, each one more elegant and graceful than the last. Their tutus were just divine! Made of white tulle with just a hint of pink. It made me wish I had a camera - to capture those exquisite details!

They do wear an abundance of layers in 1881 darling - the layers upon layers of frills! The dancers really are something to behold.

Can you believe tutus used to be just a simple skirt made of gauze? I mean just a little circle of white gauze? It really was revolutionary to add the multiple layers of tulle we know and love now, to add movement and lightness and whimsy!

We have a long way to go before the modern tutu takes over the stage, you see. But I feel sure it's well worth it. My time travel experiences are getting ever more fabulous and as the 19th century winds its way toward the 20th, I predict even bigger, even fluffier and more magnificent tutus will emerge. I will keep you all informed of course.

Oh! What a delightful memory... I found a delightful shop and treated myself to a new hat and gloves! They do really know how to dress up a lady here, that's for sure! They were just the most vibrant colours you can imagine. So of course I bought a few, it's a fashion blogger's job to find the very latest and most fashionable styles and colours - it's part of the time travel gig, my love! Now you're asking me - well why don't you travel to the future to find out the fashion for tutus of tomorrow! But don't worry I will, darling. One thing I can tell you now is we really do need more colour and pink! But for today - I've got to take a final bow! Remember, wear pink, love pink and most of all dance, darling. Don't forget, we all have a little ballerina inside us waiting to shine. See you all next Tuesday for another dose of Tutu Tuesday.

Oh - almost forgot what this date brings us in 1881 darling! This is the anniversary of the very first London Musical Festival, held on September 6, 1881, which was created by Alfred Henry Littleton! I do believe they were all decked out in beautiful attire to enjoy their shows too - and they included dancing and plays all across the town! Fancy a bit of the performing arts. Don’t forget to dance with abandon – for those dreams are just as magical and captivating as those of yore, my loves!

Don’t forget my lovely readers, I love to hear from you. Keep those questions, comments and tutu-tastic ideas coming in! Let's keep those pink tutu dreams dancing! See you all soon!

XOXO

Emma
