Tutu Tuesday: The 1881 Ballet Revolution! #TutuTuesday #BalletTutuHistory 🩰💖

Greetings from your favourite time-travelling ballerina blogger, Emma, writing to you live from 1881, a year that changed everything!

This is blog post number 2601 on www.pink-tutu.com, where we're on a mission to make the world a more sparkly, pink, and tutued place!

As we travel through the exciting history of tutus, I'm finding that every century is bursting with incredible stories and developments. Today, we're stepping into the Parisian theatre world, a hub of creative energy! The year is 1881, and a shift is happening – one that's about to leave a HUGE mark on the tutu world!

So, get your pink tutus ready, my dears, and hold on to your hats… this one's a whirlwind!

Fashion & Theatre: The perfect pairing

Paris, oh Paris! This magnificent city is alive with the spirit of fashion and the artistry of the theatre! If there's a place on earth where tutus reign supreme, it's right here. Imagine grand balls, elegant soirées, and a vibrant mix of socialites and creative souls - all dressed to the nines, with the newest fashions gracing the streets and stages!

I just adore this time period. I've spent weeks shopping for this latest outfit - a gorgeous pastel pink silk dress with an exquisite lace bodice - so romantic, right?! And for the ultimate finishing touch? A frilled, frothy pink tulle tutu, of course! It's light, airy, and perfect for waltzing under the crystal chandeliers of the Paris Opera. ✨

A New Dawn for the Tutu

Back then, a tutu wasn't just a tutu, you know? They came in various lengths and styles. We saw long, elegant tutus that flowed gracefully during the ballets of the day. And then, there were those shorter ones, reaching just to the knee. Both styles added elegance and grace to every pirouette and plié!

And the fabrics! They were so delicate and stunning! The best tutus were made with silk and tulle - layers and layers of ethereal fabric creating the most magical movements and catching the stage lights like a dazzling constellation!

But you know what? This era, this specific year of 1881, is a real turning point in tutu history! This is the year that the legendary ballerina, Carlotta Grisi, launched a revolution in tutus! Can you imagine the gasp and murmur throughout the audience? It's exciting even thinking about it now. Her revolutionary new style was short and fluffy - think of a puffy, whimsical cloud swirling on stage! This was a whole new style of tutu! The Romantic Tutu, we call it.

The Romantic Tutu became an absolute sensation! It celebrated freedom and elegance, just like a whimsical dance in the clouds! I'm already seeing its influence in modern dance wear and it makes my heart sing with joy! You'll be seeing more of it as we go deeper into this fabulous era!

What was happening on 1st November, 1881?

A fascinating little snippet for you all! This very date - 1st November, 1881 - marked a monumental occasion: The debut of La Gioconda, an Italian opera composed by the incredible Amilcare Ponchielli! Can you imagine the buzz of anticipation, the thundering applause as the curtain rose and the story unfolded? I just have to find out more about this piece, it's sounding truly thrilling. Maybe there'll even be some Romantic Tutus!

I can’t wait to see it, the anticipation is building - especially after spending a delightful afternoon at the Galeries Lafayette department store. I got the best vintage dress and, you’ll never believe it, a little pair of silver dance shoes to match!

A final thought…

My dearest friends, let's not forget, this history of the tutu is intertwined with stories of dedication, talent, and a dash of whimsical spirit. I am thrilled to be sharing this journey with you all - with you, my fabulous #pinktutu followers! I'll be back next week with more Tutu Tuesday tales! Until then, stay inspired, stay beautiful, and keep those pink tutus spinning!

Don’t forget, a little sprinkle of pink makes life just a little bit more fabulous! 💕
