#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1882-08-08

Hello, darlings! It's Emma here, your #TutuTuesday historian, back again with another fabulous journey through time! Buckle your slippers (and maybe grab a pink tutu for the journey!) as we travel back to the year 1882. This week's adventure will be taking us to the glamorous and exciting world of ballet in Paris, a city that has always embraced the grace and beauty of this enchanting art form!

For you seasoned tutu fans, you’ll already know that 1882 saw the rise of the romantic tutu. And believe me, darlings, it was revolutionary for the time! Forget the heavy, floor-length skirts of yesteryear, it was all about airy tulle, dancing lightness, and showing off those fabulous legs! It’s not difficult to see why this design, with its playful yet elegant silhouette, stole the hearts of both ballerinas and audiences.

So let's imagine a bustling day in August, 1882, where the streets of Paris hum with excitement and energy. The city buzzes with artistic ambition, and everyone is eager to experience the magic of ballet. My outfit for this particular time travel jaunt? Naturally, it has to be a shimmering pink tutu. Nothing screams 19th century Paris, "look at me, I am elegant!" quite like a lovely tulle skirt! You can practically imagine the whisperings of admiration in the air as I waltz past in the streets of the City of Lights, perhaps with a lace trim or a lovely satin bow! Oh, darling, just picture the delightful scene!

I am in the mood for a treat! You can practically smell the pastries as I wander past bakeries and boudoirs, catching a glimpse of beautifully dressed women bustling through their daily activities. I love how clothes were designed back then. Everything was a little bit more daring, a little bit more theatrical. If we're talking Parisian fashion, then naturally my shopping basket must be filled with lace, silk, and feather boas. I think I've just spotted a shop selling the most beautiful velvet ribbon... It's just the colour to tie a beautiful ribbon around my ballet slippers!

We simply have to find a ballet show to attend this evening. My heart skips a beat at the thought of all those swirling tutus, those elegant leaps and arabesques, the orchestras and the passionate emotions... A trip to the ballet is always a delightful and memorable experience! My oh my!

But what really excites me about 1882 is the story of a famous dancer, Virginia Zucchi, who was adored by audiences everywhere! Not only did she bring the ballet to a broader audience by dancing in a less conventional style, she also brought the tutu back to its lighter, graceful state. Imagine, a dancer so iconic she became a true pioneer, a true role model! And she embraced the tutu with all its romantic charm - a perfect representation of grace and feminine power, something I can definitely relate to!

This whole travel escapade to Paris has me truly brimming with excitement! Imagine a world filled with tulle, dance, and a sprinkle of pink tutu magic... The city's aura radiates such a fantastic energy that I just want to take it all in. It makes me think about our own world - how far the tutu has come and how it's always evolving with each generation! The modern dance world truly builds on its heritage, blending old-world charm with contemporary creativity!

I think I’ll find a cosy cafe for some sweet refreshment... Perhaps a petit four and some lemon tea! A perfect ending to a fabulous day in Paris. And of course, remember my little loves, to keep dancing and rocking your own pink tutus with all the joy and confidence in the world! Because even though tutus have been around for centuries, there's still something magical and inspiring about them, making each one as unique and exciting as the wearer themselves.

Don't forget to check back next week, for a new exciting #TutuTuesday journey to a new location, new time period, and even more tutus to adore! See you all then!

Your very own Emma!
