#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post 2668 - 13th February 1883
Dearest Tutu Lovers!
Welcome back to my blog, www.pink-tutu.com! It’s #TutuTuesday and I'm feeling positively positively pink, darlings! Just had the most lovely trip back in time, and I have to share it with you all.
Imagine a train journey from Derbyshire - oh, you just cannot beat a good steam train, can you? - through the English countryside, a quaint village with little cobbled streets, charming tea shops and bustling markets... It was like a scene out of a romantic novel!
And what's better than a pretty village? A ballet show in that pretty village, of course! I'm talking the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, darling.
Ah, the majesty of that theatre - a timeless elegance, you see! Now, if you can't tell, I adore those historic theatre buildings and Covent Garden was an absolute dream! You've just gotta love that iconic building and its glorious atmosphere.
But why am I gushing about this particular day in 1883, you ask?
Well, it was the day that the Ballet La Source premiered - and, oh my dear, was it divine! Now, you all know that the tutu is a true fashion staple - I am all for keeping the fashion history of the ballet alive! I can't wait to take you on a quick history journey and discover what's going on with those magnificent tutus that are on stage that night, or should I say on pointe.
This romantic ballet by Léo Delibes, featuring Célestine Galli-Marié, a dancer known for her beautiful and refined style (just like yours truly, of course), introduced something new to the world of tutus!
The costumes, you see, are what really captured the imagination - elegant, flowing tutus. Imagine billowing fabric and romantic dances, so perfectly suited to the dreamy, water nymph-inspired plot of the ballet. It’s an intricate story full of love, deceit, and mystical magic, just perfect for a ballet! The tale of the fairy of the source, a captivating story with all sorts of dancing mermaids. It's what I call magical realism!
So let’s talk tutus.
This period in ballet saw some real shifts. Gone are the heavier layers and restrictive shapes, hello flowing skirts that move with the grace of the dancers! Think swirling silhouettes, like a dance on clouds - the Romantic tutu, my dears, was born. This, the evolution of the classic ballet dress - a simple, lightweight and elegant look.
I simply adore how these skirts billowed with each movement. Now you see why the colour pink is a favourite! You can't beat that soft, fluffy lightness that just embodies the Romantic tutu perfectly. Now, a pink tutu can't get better than that, can it?! It's such a classic combination that, frankly, looks magnificent!
And I just have to confess that I’m obsessed with the way the tutu’s graceful lines complement the exquisite form of the dancer’s body. Every twirl, every leap - the Romantic tutu is pure perfection. It’s about creating an illusion of airy flight, a truly beautiful sight. And we all love beautiful sights, especially me! It’s an essential element to what I think the dance, and dancers, are all about, wouldn't you agree?
Imagine yourself twirling around the stage, a burst of colour and graceful movements. It’s like a dance with the air itself! That is how we see ballet here at pink-tutu.com.
What makes the Romantic tutu such a special garment is that it really highlights the graceful beauty of the dancers' every movement. That’s why it’s so captivating for the audience, darlings. The Romantic tutu embodies grace and agility – something you know I’m a big fan of, of course.
Imagine this - an ethereal ballet gown - delicate, refined, with shimmering fabrics and beautifully crafted detailing. Doesn't that just sound like magic?
If you're looking for that soft and romantic style that brings the story of a ballerina alive, look no further! You can get inspired by all this - let’s explore, celebrate and celebrate this gorgeous silhouette that took over the dance world. It’s a revolution, it’s an evolution, it’s a style icon – it's the Romantic tutu! It’s a reminder of that elegant charm that the Romantic period holds, don’t you think?
If you're not already wearing a tutu, do come on over and join me in my little pink-tutu paradise. You know where to find me: www.pink-tutu.com - it's the place to be to discuss the world of ballet fashion. Don't be shy - tell me all your favourite stories about the dance!
See you next #TutuTuesday, darlings!

P.S. And did I mention I spotted the loveliest new dress shop in the village? Such a delicious array of colors - pastel pinks, blues, greens - perfect for inspiration, I thought! I might just be inspired by that new shop to visit London again!
P.P.S. If anyone’s wondering what’s going on today, well today happens to be the day the Great Northern Telegraph Company lays a cable connecting Iceland and Denmark. Very progressive, don’t you think?!
