TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind Through Time, Back to 1883!

Post 2679

Oh my darlings, grab your tiaras and your teacups, because today's #TutuTuesday adventure is going to be quite the whirlwind! I'm swapping my 21st-century London studio for the cobbled streets of Paris, a city bursting with fashion and joie de vivre. I've always adored the romance of the City of Lights, but stepping back to 1883... well, let's just say, my love affair with this era just deepened!

Why, you ask? Because 1883, my dears, was a year of change for the ballerina's attire. Can you imagine a world without the glorious tulle tutu we all know and adore? I can't even fathom it, but the truth is, before this period, dancers wore rather... practical attire. More akin to leotards rather than the billowing creations that allow us to dance like winged creatures.

Thankfully, Célestine Galli-Marié, a brilliant ballerina who was at the peak of her career, was feeling a little "uninspired" with the costumes of the time. Can you blame her? Picture all that fabric weighed down with layers of layers, restricting movement and hindering their dance! This fearless and graceful woman, (and what a perfect role model, my dears!) wanted freedom of movement, elegance, and of course, the ability to float across the stage with a grace that left audiences breathless.

So, what did she do? Well, she went ahead and re-designed the entire stagewear of the time! In collaboration with the great Charles Worth (who you all should know! A veritable genius in the fashion world), she revolutionized ballet and redefined its image. With bold inspiration from Marie Taglioni, (the original tutu queen!), she started designing short, delicate tutus, crafted from several layers of tulle, leaving her to move with a fluttery beauty and freedom like never seen before!

I could honestly gush for hours about Célestine's daring innovation! A single glimpse of her floating like a feather on the stage had people murmuring "What is she wearing?" They had to see more, and this darling sparked a Tutu Revolution throughout Europe. In those days, dancers were so revered; their choices and moves set trends around the world!

My journey to 1883 was truly inspiring! This past week has been a veritable whirlwind of Parisian delights - a fashion show featuring these exquisite new tutus was simply breathtaking! So elegant, yet daring, it showcased not only grace but the ballerina's power in their own art form! And don't even get me started on the shops. The fabrics, the designs... it was pure magic. I couldn't resist a few decadent purchases - think exquisite velvets, lace as delicate as cobwebs, and yes, several gorgeous tutus! (Pink, of course!)

And it wouldn't be a Tutu Tuesday without a little dance history. 1883, ladies, was a year bursting with life and spectacle. The Parisian opera house was buzzing with activity - from stunning opera singers and dazzling ballet performances to the latest theatrical plays, this was where the pulse of the world beat a little faster. There was so much on offer - opera, ballet, theatrical plays... and of course, grand balls in lavish mansions - every day felt like a dream.

One very important performance occurred on this date, May 1st 1883, that was a landmark moment in musical history, and a perfect illustration of how exciting and changing Paris was. The world-famous French composer Claude Debussy, known for his delicate, nuanced compositions, was commissioned to write music for a new production of a Shakespeare play! I was fortunate to catch a performance - it was simply phenomenal. Debussy's music intertwined with the Bard's poetry - truly magical.

There’s a touch of magic about this period. Everything seems so...alive and exciting! You really feel the pulse of history as you walk these streets, witnessing artists and performers leaving their mark on the world, forever altering its course! I feel inspired and charged!

As for me, I'm ready to dance my way back to my own time - my head brimming with new ideas. Paris is always so captivating... but London awaits! I shall be sure to weave the delicate textures of Parisian lace and the graceful flutter of the short, new tutu, into my own designs!

So darling, till next week's Tutu Tuesday, be sure to remember - always find your inner ballerina, and your perfect pink tutu!

Always remember, life is better in a tutu. And pink is best!
