#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 4th December 1883 - A Step Back In Time!

Welcome back to my blog, darlings! This is Emma, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, and it's Tuesday, which means it's time to delve into the wondrous world of ballet history! This week, we're whisking ourselves back to the year 1883 on the 4th of December.

As you all know, my passion is for tutus, especially the glorious pink ones. It's my mission in life to see the world wear a pink tutu, and so I've embarked on this little project of mine, exploring the evolution of this truly spectacular garment through the ages!

And where better to begin than the very place that first set my tutu-loving heart aflutter: Paris. I just love the energy of the city, the buzz of the theaters and, of course, the magnificent Palais Garnier. It's the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere, the history and the very essence of ballet.

But I'm not only here for the performance. My journey takes me further afield this week! We're hopping aboard a lovely little steam train and venturing out to the charming seaside town of Dieppe. Oh, it's just the loveliest place!

Dieppe, though perhaps not as famous as Paris for its dance, still holds a special place in the story of ballet. This quaint little town has a rich history with ballet, and guess what? On the 4th December 1883, there was something quite special taking place.

You see, back in the 1880s, Dieppe was a popular holiday destination, especially for Parisians. It’s not just a beachside getaway either, it has a vibrant cultural scene, including a fabulous casino. This particular date happened to be the date of their annual Masquerade Ball.

Oh, it must have been so fabulous! Imagine the shimmering gowns, the dashing gentlemen in their suits, the dancing, the music, the excitement! This was the time when a lady could truly showcase her flair and style.

And the style of 1883, darling, was truly grand. The tutus were still evolving, you see, taking inspiration from the elegant silhouette of the Romantic period. They were longer than the tutus of today, flowing down to the ankles with a graceful, voluminous effect. Think layers upon layers of tulle, like clouds swirling around you, all in the most glorious shades of white and pink. Imagine the elegance and artistry of the swirling tulle as they waltzed and twirled. Oh, the beauty! And who knows? Maybe those grand Parisian ladies brought a few of their own tutus to wear, to show off the latest dance trends in a different way!

It was, perhaps, more for showing off that look of ballerina than for actual dance steps, though those are just a small part of the glamour. Imagine, darlings, how truly magical a masquerade ball would have been at that time.

So while our pink tutus might be a bit more modern today, we can certainly take inspiration from the glamorous ladies of 1883! We can make every occasion feel a little more special, a little more ballet by embracing our own tutu. And remember, the pinker the tutu, the better!

This little adventure today is a perfect example of how history can be so much fun, and how important it is to celebrate our heritage, even when it comes to a lovely, whimsical, and wonderful garment like a tutu!

That’s all for this #TutuTuesday, darlings! Be sure to check back next Tuesday for another exciting adventure through ballet history!

Now, it’s off to London for a delicious cup of tea and a spot of shopping! I wonder what wonders I might find… Perhaps some beautiful new fabrics for my own dream tutu. I'm just itching to bring that #PinkTutu vision to life, and there's a lot to discover when you have a bit of time for travel and shopping in London. And who knows what sort of glamorous ball, show or performance I might discover there… Until next time, darlings!
