#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1884-04-22 (Post #2730)

Bonjour, darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back again for another instalment of our beloved #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History! Today we're heading back to the 22nd of April, 1884, to uncover the sartorial secrets of the dance world – a world buzzing with elegant swirls, captivating movements, and, of course, breathtaking tutus!

Remember to grab a cuppa, darlings, this journey will be a right delightful one, and by the end, you'll be practically dancing on your tiptoes with excitement!

As you know, my life revolves around all things ballet and, naturally, the most iconic piece of attire – the tutu. I mean, just look at this delightful pink beauty adorning my very self, right? Isn’t it divine?! My passion for tutus has taken me across the ages and across the globe. You've seen me sashay through history in posts that span from Ancient Egypt to Renaissance Italy, but today, we are landing right here, in beautiful Paris!

Oh, Paris! The City of Love, and as a lover of everything beautiful, I’m eternally smitten with this city. The aroma of freshly baked croissants, the cobblestone streets echoing with the hum of a million Parisian lives, the graceful lines of architecture that seemingly rise towards the heavens, and the vibrant spirit that vibrates within its very essence - all add to the city's magnetic allure. And you just cannot talk about Paris without mentioning its profound influence on dance and the majestic art of ballet. This city, truly, is the beating heart of dance.

I’ve taken my trusty time-travel contraption, fashioned from an old-fashioned music box and a bejewelled thimble – don’t ask! – and transported myself to this Parisian wonderland, specifically the Opéra Garnier, an opulent palace of performance art that opened in 1875, right after my time-travelling career got off the ground! The Opéra Garnier truly is a sight to behold. I was dazzled the first time I stepped through those golden doors. Think soaring marble columns, glittering chandeliers that shimmer with thousands of crystals, the velvety softness of the crimson theatre seats, and the thrill of anticipation for the curtain to rise! I must tell you, darlings, seeing the performance of Le Corsaire, one of my absolute favourites, for the first time, left me breathless and utterly enchanted!

Let’s get back to those tutus! In the era of 1884, you might see tutus taking on some pretty magnificent forms! The classic Romantic tutu, a flowing vision of ethereal delicacy, is all the rage! Imagine a wisp of a skirt, just one layer of gossamer fabric, creating a billowing halo of tulle around the dancers' limbs as they glide through the stage. The tutus are not as voluminous as you’ll see them later on; that'll be our future journey!

But just look at the artistry in these creations, with their beautiful, intricately-woven lace details. They are truly masterpieces of design, meant to capture a whimsical elegance. In that very spirit, even the shoes have a delightful whimsical look, with their delicate satin bows and tiny little buckles. Every dancer becomes an intricate ballet vignette - just magical!

Of course, for this time period, all those who truly understand fashion, will want to indulge in a spot of colour. Whilst pink remains a most adored hue for my pink-tutu loving self, think bold colours! Crimson, royal blue, and emeralds were much sought after. Just imagine the shimmering shades catching the candlelight on stage! The ladies looked every inch a dream come true.

But the magic of ballet transcends the beauty of clothes. In those moments, you’ll see grace become a language, the bodies speaking a tale of pure passion and heart. Even in my time travel adventures, these stories touch me in a most special way. They evoke emotions, tell of the battles of love and longing, of passion and sacrifice. And these emotions never cease to amaze me, they are so very powerful!

And then there’s the music, my darlings! The enchanting melodies of the period resonate with such depth. Composers like Tchaikovsky are breathing life into their beautiful scores, painting images with their music and stirring emotions through melodies.

Back to our 22nd April, 1884 – a special date that held quite a theatrical celebration. Imagine my joy to arrive at the Opéra Garnier, just in time for the world premiere of Carmen, a vibrant operatic extravaganza based on a well-known novella. The vibrant melody, with a tinge of dramatic flair, will certainly appeal to those who prefer to express themselves a little differently through music and song. Carmen is an example of how theatre wasn't always confined to ballet; the art of storytelling, my dears, took many forms!

A beautiful mix of vibrant music, captivating drama and dazzling outfits - Paris always provides a stunning backdrop for any occasion! Even the journey back to my home in Derbyshire, England (ahem, not necessarily by tutu-time travelling contraption but a rather delightful vintage train) is more enjoyable than the usual thrilling trip back to the present! After all, who could resist looking out at the countryside scenery - green fields, rolling hills - and the sight of cottages with smoke curling from their chimneys - and not imagine a whole ballet performance around them!

You know what? If you’ve got a little girl (or a grown-up girl, like myself) in your life who's got that twinkle in her eye for dancing and an unbridled passion for tutus, why not get them some beautiful dance classes? Ballet can be such a fabulous, empowering and delightful journey! Not only will it enhance their physical grace and artistry but instill self-confidence and ignite a burning desire to move and create beautiful art, just like my pink tutu dreams!

Right, dears, I must rush off to create a fresh post for next Tuesday! (Yes, that's my modus operandi - a #TutuTuesday blog post every week) This journey is just beginning! Until then, embrace all the lovely colours, twirling tunes and, of course, the gorgeous elegance of your very own, unique, fabulous tutus! Remember, we can all be princesses in pink – just believe!
