#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time ā 17th June 1884!
Hello, darlings! Welcome back to another dazzling #TutuTuesday adventure! Today, weāre taking a grand voyage back to the glorious year 1884, a time when tutus were truly coming into their own!
As you know, my dearest readers, Iām a firm believer that every Tuesday is an excuse to celebrate the tutu, the embodiment of grace, femininity, and sheer joy. And what better way to do so than to delve into the rich history of this enchanting garment, a garment that continues to enthral and inspire to this day?
For this weekās historical foray, Iāve whisked myself away on the trusty rails, straight to the very heart of Parisian elegance, the city that simply dances with style. The year 1884 was a pivotal point in the evolution of the tutu, a time when the classic form we recognise today was really starting to take shape. Gone were the long, cumbersome skirts of the past, replaced by a shorter, more manageable silhouette, one that allowed for greater movement and fluidity on the stage. Itās a dance of evolution, my dears!
Iāve found myself at the esteemed Opera Garnier, a grand theatre built in 1875 and an icon of Parisian opulence. Itās an architectural masterpiece, soaring ceilings, breathtaking ornamentation and that signature red and gold palette. Truly a testament to the grandeur of the era. I simply adore the French for their dedication to elegance, even in their theatre architecture!
Inside, a whisper of excitement ripples through the audience. Tonight, itās the premiere of āLa Esmeraldaā, a stunning ballet composed by Cesare Pugni with choreography by Arthur Saint-LĆ©on. Itās based on Victor Hugo's famed āNotre-Dame de Parisā and Iām simply bursting with anticipation to see it! This very day, 17th June 1884, was a special occasion as it marked the debut of the renowned ballerina, Carlotta Grisi, as the enchanting Esmeralda. This is the perfect way to immerse ourselves in the tutus of this period!
Speaking of tutus, this production is absolutely swirling with exquisite costume design. I simply adore the detail, the graceful lines, the opulent embellishments ā every dancer a visual masterpiece! While theyāre still clinging to the traditional romantic ballet form, theyāre edging towards the elegant silhouette we love. The use of tulle, the lightness and the soft movement is truly captivating! The tutus in this era were a work of art, meticulously crafted with layer upon layer of fine fabric.
Carlotta Grisiās own tutu was especially delightful - a vision of soft pink tulle, delicate ribbons and graceful lace - simply divine! Itās enough to make me want to run back to my studio and start crafting my own pink masterpiece. I just need a few extra layers of tulle for that cloud-like effectā¦
Of course, while I'm here in the city of lights, I couldnāt resist a jaunt to one of the grand Parisian shops. La Mode is my personal favourite ā just picture silks in every colour imaginable, shimmering brocades, feathers that could rival the angels' wings and an endless supply of ribbons, for crafting tutus or adorning your hat! There's such an air of joy and creativity in these shops, it's truly inspiring!
And while weāre on the subject of tutus and fashion, letās talk about The Parisian Fashion Revolution of 1884! This is where we start to see a transition from the more conservative dress of the Victorian era, towards something lighter, airier and yes, even suggestive. Remember, we're moving away from the corsets, towards something less restrictive.
What is so exciting about this change? Well, you could say itās a reflection of the burgeoning confidence of women. Think about it ā as women embrace their individuality, their bodies, their freedom of movementā¦ well, what better way to express that freedom than through a magnificent tutu!
The fashion revolution is dancing along with the changes in ballet. Think of those beautiful silk bodices, shimmering like moonlight on a summer night! The shorter tutus are reflecting the desire for freedom of movement and self-expression, a new elegance. Itās an explosion of beauty, in motion and on display!
And I, my dearest readers, couldn't be happier to witness this shift! As for me, my journey through time continues! Remember to follow my blog, because each week, Iāll bring you closer to the history of the tutu, sharing tales and insights from every corner of this magnificent world.
Letās get that Tutu Tuesday momentum going, shall we? Donāt forget to tag me on your photos, wearing your own beautiful tutus. The pinker the better! Until next week, my darlings. Be bold, be beautiful, be Tutu-licious!
Love,
Emma.
