Tutu Tuesday: The Tutu's Journey - A Blast From The Past (Post #2748)
Hello, my fellow tutu lovers! It's Emma here, back with another fabulous trip into the history of our beloved tutus! 🩰✨ Today, we're taking a little time-travel jaunt all the way back to 26th August 1884, a time when the ballet world was starting to blossom in the most glorious way. Now, let's just be honest – you couldn't catch me rocking a pink tutu quite yet. We had to wait a few more years before they really exploded in popularity! But hey, the fashion was fabulous even then!
For this week’s #TutuTuesday adventure, I found myself in Paris – the heart of all things stylish and glamorous, naturally. Stepping out onto the bustling cobblestones of the Place de l'Opéra just sent a shiver down my spine, a shiver of sheer excitement. After all, this is the home of the Opéra Garnier – a majestic theatre filled with elegance and the wonder of dance. Oh, and did I mention it was utterly breathtaking?
Imagine stepping into a gilded, velvet-draped heaven of grand chandeliers, swirling staircases, and the most beautiful opera house you could possibly dream of! And this place, folks, was alive with the most delightful melodies – waltzes, grand ballets – they were all performed by dancers with ethereal grace that almost brought a tear to my eye.
Now, while we haven’t reached the era of the tutu's total reign, there were some rather impressive gowns being worn back then. I spied a dancer – a real beauty she was, flitting across the stage in a floor-length, billowing tulle skirt. It wasn't quite a tutu as we know it – it had a wider silhouette – but it still hinted at the magic that would blossom years later!
What truly set it apart from the voluminous gowns worn for balls and fancy events, you see, was its lightness and airiness. Imagine that, fluttering about with such elegance, seemingly defying gravity. Talk about a dance dream come true! It wasn’t the pink tulle dream of today, but it did pave the way.
Remember that we owe a great deal of the tutu’s popularity to the rise of ballet and the grande jeté – those incredible leaps dancers performed across the stage. Ballet, folks, it truly was becoming the hottest thing, spreading from the royal courts of France all across the globe, inspiring every stage from the Théâtre de l’Opéra Garnier to…well, Derbyshire where I was born, which wasn’t quite ready for ballet just yet, but one day… one day we’ll see the full impact.
That night, after the show, I made a beeline for a charming little boutique tucked away near the opera house. Ooh la la, it was a fashion haven! Silks, lace, fabrics – every shade imaginable. Imagine – a cornucopia of glorious possibilities. Now, they didn't quite have tutus as we know them today, but there were some utterly divine silk and velvet dresses. Imagine – you could twirl in them, though it wouldn’t have been a ballet spin… Imagine… imagine what ballet would do to the dresses… Imagine those billowing gowns and imagine the silk skirts flowing around as the ballerina pirouettes. Imagine, my friends, and you shall receive the magic of dance in your heart! 💖
This is the kind of fashion dream I simply cannot resist! And you can be sure, when I step into the tutus of my dreams (especially my favourite pink ones, of course!), I’ll be channeling that magical, Parisian spirit. After all, it was the very foundation of the tutus we know and love today!
But that's not all! Because you know I love exploring, I hopped onto a delightful train bound for London. I just had to see the Ballet being performed for a larger audience in Covent Garden, and you wouldn't believe what I saw! There it was – another exquisite dance theatre, alive with the elegance and artistry that made the heart flutter.
This time, though, it wasn’t so much about the tutus. It was about experiencing the history of ballet, of the stories told by these beautiful dancers. I took in the exquisite movements, the expressive poses, the beautiful melodies and watched in awe as the dancers told a silent story through their graceful motions. This, dear readers, was pure magic!
After the show, I headed out to a charming cafe near the theatre to soak it all in, pondering the wonder of ballet and its magical influence. As the afternoon waned, I sipped my tea, soaking up the stories shared by London’s chattering crowd about the theatre, the music, and the dance, pondering my time-travel plan, dreaming of tutus and my next ballet-inspired journey!
So, dear friends, what do you think of my Parisian journey? I'm absolutely certain the tutu’s journey to iconic ballet attire was well underway by this point – and in no time at all, it would become the quintessential ballerina look we all love today!
And, as always, remember to twirl and spread your joy in the most fabulous way you can! Don't forget to share your favourite Tutu Tuesday stories with me – and maybe we’ll even take a trip to the past to explore the history together!
Until next time, happy twirling, my friends! 💕
P.S. Did you know, today marks the anniversary of the birth of legendary ballerina, Anna Pavlova (20 August, 1881)? Imagine – that same year, the Grands Ballets du Theatre National produced a performance of ‘Swan Lake’. Can you believe? Just one year away from that fateful date I took you to today…the history of ballet is simply enthralling! I must get back on that train and continue my investigation! Let’s continue to keep those twirling memories flowing! 💖
