#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1885-03-03

Hello my darling Tutu Twirlers! It's Emma here, back with another installment of our fabulous #TutuTuesday blog. This week, we're taking a trip through time, all the way back to the 1880s, to the land where tutus are worshipped: Paris, my loves! I absolutely adore Paris. It's so chic, and all about elegant style, and it’s no surprise that tutus found their absolute home here. The trains are divine in Paris; they glide through the streets with such grace and style. I especially love the opulent carriages with the plush seats and all the ornate embellishments, perfect for taking in the Parisian scenes.

This week's journey is taking me back to March the 3rd, 1885. Did you know that this date is utterly significant for our dearest, beloved tutus? Well, darling, let me tell you, on this very day, a certain Mademoiselle Marie Taglioni performed at the Theatre de la Renaissance in Paris in a stunningly ethereal, impossibly short tutu! It was groundbreaking for its time, utterly defying the Victorian trends and taking everyone's breath away! Imagine, all those layers of fabric, whisking about as Marie twirled across the stage - a vision of loveliness!

This wasn't just any tutu. It was, my dear, the tutu that ignited a revolution in the world of dance and fashion. Yes, dear ones, a simple garment that would transform the ballet forever, and ultimately, shape how ballerinas looked - and how they continue to look today. Think of all those dainty tutus, frothing with tulle and flowing like billowing clouds - that's what Marie’s tiny, fabulous creation helped create! Can you imagine, a vision of fluff, whirling across the stage in a dazzling display of grace and ethereal beauty. Marie, in her revolutionary tutu, truly inspired us all!

But Marie's little tutu revolution was a whisper in the vast orchestra of history - a whisper that took time to find its crescendo! The Victorians were notoriously resistant to the decollete (that means revealing, darling!), and let's be honest, this tutu was rather on the short side, by the standards of the time. Can you even imagine how scandalous? All that gorgeous leg, on show! What an utter delight! But over time, as people caught the tutu bug, they just couldn't get enough of its feminine grace. Ballet tutus became the ultimate signifier of elegance and elegance. Imagine, little pink tutus, swirling and twirling on every stage, in every performance!

This little tale is just a tiny, yet fabulous peek into the story of tutus and how they changed the world of ballet. There are so many other extraordinary stories to tell. That's why, you gorgeous darlings, I am so very excited to share these enchanting tutu journeys with you! Come back every Tuesday and join me in my mission to make every single day a Tutu Tuesday!

Until then, twirl and sparkle with all your fabulous selves!

And as a little treat, a fabulous photo of the utterly captivating Marie Taglioni performing her dazzling dance in the revolutionary, delightful little tutu, all the way back in 1885! Just look at those graceful lines, the fluttering tulle, the elegant stance. Now that's true Tutu Magic, isn't it, my darling friends?
