#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1885-12-22
Hello my lovely tutu-loving readers! It’s your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, here. It’s Tuesday, and that can only mean one thing - #TutuTuesday is here! I hope you’re all feeling wonderfully twirly this week.
Today, we’re journeying back to 22nd December 1885. Oh, what a magnificent era! Can you imagine the incredible creations of that time? From the puffed sleeves to the elaborate hairdos, it was a time for true artistry and drama. The ladies of the time certainly knew how to make an entrance, especially when it came to the theatre.
So let’s dive into the fascinating history of ballet tutus!
A Glimpse into 1885 Ballet:
The year 1885 was brimming with captivating ballets! Imagine, graceful ballerinas twirling across the stage, adorned in magnificent, ethereal tutus. I have to say, the costumes of this period were rather delightful. While some tutus might have been a bit less "fluffy" compared to what we see today, they still held that sense of ethereal magic. The delicate tulle and the carefully crafted patterns…oh my!
Speaking of those magnificent gowns and their swirling beauty, it’s fascinating to note how closely they were connected to the storytelling on stage. Each step, each gesture, was emphasized by the dance and the costume itself. Think of how the tutu captured the essence of a ballerina's flight, a graceful movement that transformed mere fabric into something wondrously ethereal.
Did You Know?
One of the iconic ballerina-turned-choreographer figures of the late 19th century was none other than the glorious, absolutely fantastic Anna Pavlova! Can you imagine, just seeing the way she danced… and those iconic tutus, crafted to match her style, were nothing short of a sight to behold!
And here’s a fun little tidbit: This time period also saw the introduction of tutus that incorporated different materials – think of satin, velvet, and even silks! And wouldn't you know it, those exquisite combinations brought an extra touch of artistry and elegance to the whole experience.
A Trip to the Theatre in 1885:
Of course, as a true tutu enthusiast, I couldn’t possibly miss a visit to the theatre! While on this trip, I was particularly captivated by the majestic Russian ballet. Think elegant swans, beautiful dancers, and a dash of theatrical magic! I even saw the graceful and iconic Swan Lake! Now, who doesn’t love a little swan ballet magic, especially on a Tuesday?
