Tutu Tuesday #2851: A Whirlwind of Pink Through Time - August 17th, 1886
Greetings, darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-clad time traveller, ready to whisk you away on a journey through the fabulous world of ballet tutus. As always, it's #TutuTuesday and time to delve into the delightful history of this iconic garment, with today's stop being the glorious year 1886, on the 17th of August.
Just imagine, dear readers, my little pink tutu, which always seems to gather the most delighted and curious stares, was actually quite revolutionary in this time period! Today, a simple pink tutu is just a matter of course, a little splash of colour that puts a smile on every face. Back then though? My, it wasn't as widely embraced!
Now, picture this: I've landed in a lovely, grand theatre, and what a delight! It's buzzing with a charming energy, an elegant audience gathering in their best attire. Ladies are in their sumptuous gowns and furs, the gentlemen all dapper in their formal wear, and my oh my, even the theatre itself boasts grand architectural beauty, intricate carvings, and rich velvet seats. I just know that there’s an abundance of gossip, excitement and whispered commentary swirling around the room as we prepare to watch a dance spectacle.
Fashion Flashback
Today, it's the ballet I'm truly curious about. And while they are beginning to adopt the romantic and dreamy tutus we all know and love, it's still very much in its formative years, undergoing some rather magnificent evolutions. These early dancers aren't flitting across the stage in billowing silk quite yet. Instead, we're treated to long, layered skirts, a delicate vision in tulle and lace, much closer in spirit to a fairytale gown than the iconic tight, one-layered style we know today. The focus was still on flowing lines and the romanticism of the dances themselves.
But my darlings, there is such a romanticism to those intricate and ethereal skirts! Imagine the whispers as a ballerina spins gracefully, the tulle flowing around her like a soft, dreamy cloud, it’s simply enchanting. Imagine, too, how wonderfully impractical these dances must have been. They've been putting so much work into just moving and creating visual impact. My modern day ballerina legs, wearing those super simple but graceful, streamlined designs, would never have had the fortitude to tackle such a complex outfit!
Tutu Trivia
On this very date, August 17th 1886, a delightful little bit of ballet trivia, we can find a gem for your repertoire: a truly lovely piece called The Sleeping Beauty is enjoying its premiere. Imagine, a show of such grace and wonder! This fairy-tale-inspired dance brought new excitement to ballet's romantic themes, a spectacle that set audiences’ imaginations soaring. It's considered a turning point, an artistic triumph that showcased just how beautifully the art form could translate fantasy onto the stage, setting the stage for our own era’s iconic tutus. How wondrous!
You can bet I was there, my pink tutu twinkling in the midst of the spectacle, adding just a touch of my trademark whimsical sparkle! After all, a tutu makes any occasion a party, and these ballets are absolutely magical.
Time Traveller Tidbits
Remember my last post about how the dance form began to progress, how those grand skirts, the layered layers of lace and tulle became smaller? Well, it was a fascinating time! It was an era of innovation in ballet! It’s interesting to observe the transition, how that grand romantic aesthetic that started the 19th century began to be refined to accentuate the movement and grace of the dancers, creating that iconic image we now all love.
Fashion Fanatic Finds
My travels are always fueled by an insatiable passion for finding fabulous fabrics and delightful creations, my darling. Now, even as much as I love a delicate pink tutu, it can get quite chilly in my travels. You might imagine I have to bring several outfits with me, because you can never have enough choices in fashion.
Imagine my glee! As I step into the fashionable heart of this 1886 scene, I am mesmerised by the craftsmanship, the fine materials, the craftsmanship in even the most mundane pieces! Just picture delicate silks woven with shimmering silver thread, the way those intricate bodices accentuate the feminine figure. I just love how each item tells a story. They are simply bursting with elegance and character!
This historical excursion is certainly not one to miss out on for the stylish connoisseur. You know how I love a good shopping spree, darling, and trust me, if you ever have the chance to time travel with me to the late 1880s, be prepared to make the most of the stunning fashion. A touch of historical charm just adds an extra layer of excitement, something for all you fashion-conscious readers!
