Tutu Tuesday: A Peek into 1888! #2957

Hello lovelies! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time travelling ballerina blogger, ready to take you on another journey through the history of ballet! Buckle up, because this week, we're stepping back in time to a glorious August in 1888.

Now, you might think 1888 sounds a little… gasp dusty, right? But trust me, darling, fashion and ballet were positively blossoming in those days! Imagine Parisian streets lined with women in their most elaborate, swishing, layered skirts, all vying for a glimpse of the latest fashion at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees! That's where we find ourselves this week, amongst the glamour and bustle of Parisian high society, where ballet reigned supreme!

But before we head into the dazzling world of 1888's stage, let's chat about my fashion choices for this time period, shall we? Now, you know I adore my pink tutus. They're the epitome of femininity, joy, and … well … just plain fabulous! And while I’m never one to resist a good tulle swirl, there’s a certain elegance and refinement to the costumes of the late Victorian era that deserves our respect. Think structured silhouettes, dramatic flowing fabrics, and a dash of Victorian drama! Imagine myself stepping out of the time machine into a flurry of lace, silks, and an impressive bustle, complete with a flowing skirt, perfectly complimenting the pink tutu!

Alright, now that we've established my absolute commitment to pink and a love for timeless elegance, let's get to the meat and potatoes! Today's focus is, as you know, on tutus. So let's talk about the big difference between today's tutus and the ones of 1888: Volume. Oh yes, dear friends, the tutus of this time were… BIG. Seriously big! The ladies wore layered and layered and layered tulle for a dramatic and awe-inspiring effect, all carefully engineered for that poof to perfection. Remember, ballet was in the process of transitioning from a royal court spectacle to the theatre. You could call this the flourish phase of ballet’s early growth, the ‘wow’ factor at it’s prime. It’s no wonder that tutus were a must-have, not only for ballerinas but for ladies attending their evening theatre soiree. Just imagine yourself waltzing with your friends in the opera boxes with an oversized plume of tulle sweeping the floor with your each graceful turn - how absolutely heavenly!

On that note, what is on this very day, 28th August 1888? Let’s go to the Opera! While today doesn't have any specific tutu based events happening, theatre was a popular evening event. The ballet was a central component in Parisian society - think the high class dinner theater of our era but, let’s be honest, on an even larger scale, and more extravagant in terms of fashion. If you're looking for an event to go to in London on this day, perhaps you might head to Covent Garden? There were probably ballet productions to enjoy or the London Palladium might be putting on a great show - if you are in London, the theater has your name on it, that’s for sure. However, I'm keeping my travelling on hold and staying put in Paris this Tuesday. I am saving my travelling to visit London for a more fashion-forward day on another trip. This Tuesday is dedicated to getting you involved!

Speaking of tutus and travel, what is your favorite way to get around on your time travels? I love to take a train journey. You really get a sense of the place when you’re slowly rumbling along in those wooden carriages - they just exude such old-world glamour, and then the view… it’s pure enchantment! It reminds me that the real magic of traveling through time isn't just in the destinations, but also in the journeys themselves!

Speaking of destinations, are we not forgetting something rather important? Pink. Remember what I mentioned earlier, darlings? My goal is to make the world a place where every lady gets to experience the joy of wearing a pink tutu. So let me know in the comments section how you are planning on incorporating pink tutus into your daily life!

Stay glamorous and never stop twirling!

Love,

Emma
