#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time! Ballet Tutu History: 1889-02-12
Greetings, darlings! Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, ready to whisk you back through time with my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History post, numero 2981, if you can believe it! This week, we're going all the way back to 12th February 1889, and as ever, let's keep the fabulous flowing! (Plus, don't forget to pop over to www.pink-tutu.com every Tuesday for your dose of tutu magic!)
Oh, and let's get something clear, darlings! This is my favourite time of the year, just as much as any other. Even the days in the middle of February with the bleakest, dampest, greyest skies - those days, for some reason, always call to me to dust off my prettiest tutus. Perhaps it's something about how a burst of tulle and colour can make even the most gloomy day a bit brighter, don't you think?
But I'm getting ahead of myself! Where were we, darlings? Ah, yes, 1889! It's a truly magical year, so hold onto your tutus, as I whip us right back to this period. Imagine:
Paris, the ultimate fashion hub, is positively bubbling with energy, thanks to The Exposition Universelle, a monumental world's fair brimming with wonders! Think grand palaces filled with ingenious inventions, sparkling displays of industrial might, and…lots of dazzling outfits. (It's all about that fashionable flair!) And even if our tutus aren't quite yet "en vogue" among the crowds (tut tut! cough), we can definitely get a feel for the beautiful dresses and hairstyles that were all the rage back then.
Now, on the other side of the globe, we have St. Petersburg, a city just as vibrant as Paris, although a little colder, don't you think? Shivers Luckily, they have lovely warm fur coats to wear in this magnificent city, even though, funnily enough, this particular date in 1889, marks the birthday of a lady who would forever be remembered for her…ballet shoes: Anna Pavlova! Yes, my darling ballerinas, the "divine" Pavlova was born on this day, and she would soon grace the world with her grace and brilliance on the stage. Talk about iconic, darlings!
But wait, what's this, my lovely readers? Back in Derbyshire, the very heart of England, a bright young Emma is starting to stir, and it's the beginning of the day before the famous date! We know our Derbyshire has nothing on the glitz and glamour of those big-city spectacles, but there's something magical in a good country town too, and Emma loves being home, before hopping back on the train to another exciting new location.
February 12th in Derbyshire is just another day, albeit a Tuesday, so for our beloved Emma, this means a delicious breakfast, followed by a whirlwind of getting dressed in something very pink, very tutu, very lovely, and rushing off to get ready to entertain her lovely local townspeople. This darling loves going to all the big dance balls, dressing up, chatting about all the gossip, having a bit of fun, a few cheeky nibbles (chocolate dipped strawberries always get her giggling), and being ready for her performance for a little while afterwards!
But even though our Emma is here in 1889, don't forget that the magic of the time travel machine is still strong, and, let's just say, she has big plans! You can guarantee that she’ll be dashing through the decades on Tuesday to give you all that wonderful #TutuTuesday history!
Speaking of magic, I just know I will be making my way to St. Petersburg, before too long, and this time, I won’t even mention all of that cold weather, no darling, I promise you!
Stay fabulous! Keep those pink tutus twirling! Until next Tuesday!
With lots of love and sparkle,
Emma 💖✨
