Tutu Tuesday: A Blast from the Past (1889-05-28)!

#2996

Hello, darling tutu lovers! It's Emma, your pink-clad time traveler, and it's a brand new #TutuTuesday! Grab your champagne and dainty sandwiches, darlings, because we're taking a trip back to 1889, a time when tutus were, well, just starting to strut their stuff!

Now, I know what you're thinking – 1889? That's a good century before the golden age of ballet, right? Wrong, my darlings! This was a time when dance was transforming from stiff, formal movements to something more... well, ballet-y. Imagine long, flowing skirts instead of stiff corsets, a touch more elegance and freedom for the legs! Oh, the wonders!

Of course, back then, it wasn't just any skirt that became a tutu. Think of a lovely, airy confection of delicate tulle, maybe with a dash of silk or velvet, cascading around the dancer's legs, all finished with a bejeweled waistband and a flourish of delicate feathers. Imagine! They were so very elegant, not just practical pieces for twirling and leaping but little masterpieces of craftsmanship and style.

And you know, this journey back to the 1880s wasn't just about admiring vintage tutus. It was also a chance to see ballet taking root on the Parisian stage, the world's stage, even, some would say! Oh, I felt such a thrill to be in the audience at the Paris Opéra! Such incredible talent! I even caught a glimpse of Isadora Duncan, one of the first pioneers of what we'd call "ballet street" nowadays. You can imagine the energy! Just her presence lit up the room!

Now, you know my love for shopping is unmatched, so what could a fashionable girl do in Paris, except … shop! The* Galeries Lafayette, my darlings, a marvel of the age! So much lace, silk, velvet, tulle, just calling for a fabulous tutu creation. I simply *had to get some fabrics. Maybe I’ll whip up a new tutu!

Speaking of Paris and 1889, you can't ignore the World Fair! Imagine, an exhibition celebrating all things new and revolutionary. You bet the tutu was there, flaunting its beauty in a whirlwind of dance and spectacle! Imagine a spectacle!

Of course, darling readers, I don't have a clue what this date holds specifically for tutu history - you’d be surprised how few records they kept! There's no record of a groundbreaking new tutu or a momentous ballet premiere, but I still felt like I had to travel back. There is magic in just breathing the air and seeing the spark of newness and creativity, a feeling you can only find when travelling to a new era!

And it got me thinking, darling. Maybe the greatest history of tutus is not written in dusty old archives, but in the fabric of these little masterpieces themselves. Every little stitch, every twirl, every dance - these are the stories we tell in our movement and the beautiful creations we make to accompany them.

So go forth, my darlings! Whether you're twirling in your living room or on the grand stage, remember - there's a touch of history in every single tutu you wear! And remember, *the history of ballet and tutus is ongoing! * We create that history ourselves by wearing them, dancing in them and designing new and beautiful versions.

Don't forget to keep up your dance practice, embrace the pink, and always remember, it’s never too late to wear a tutu.

* Until next Tuesday, darlings!*

*Stay fabulous and wear pink! *

Emma xx
