#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History, June 11th, 1889! (Post #2998)

Bonjour mes chéries! It’s your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here with another trip through history – this week, we’re pirouetting back to June 11th, 1889, to the heart of ballet's golden era!

Oh, darling, just imagine! I’ve travelled by train (I’m absolutely addicted to the romance of trains!) to none other than the majestic Paris Opera House! My heart just flutters when I imagine the opulence – glittering chandeliers, velvet-covered seats, the scent of exquisite perfume wafting through the air. Oh, I could just get lost in this world for days!

Now, back to the magic! As always, I love seeing how ballet fashions evolved. You’ll be pleased to know, tutus in 1889 were seriously taking centre stage. Gone are the days of just short, frilly dresses. Think sweeping, billowing tulle! (Just like yours truly!) They're often intricately layered, shimmering with embroidery, sparkling sequins, and elegant floral details. Just delightful!

And here’s a fascinating tidbit: in 1889, ballerinas were starting to wear tights with their tutus, giving them a sleek, streamlined look and greater freedom of movement – a revolution for dancers! Can you imagine how hard it was for them back then with just bloomers and a bit of gauze?! (Well, maybe we won't picture that.)

Now, if you’re looking for something really spectacular, picture this: the legendary ballerina, La Belle Otero was showcasing her legendary talents, known for her sultry elegance and showstopping performances. She wore the most dramatic costumes, and those amazing stage effects and theatrics really sent audiences into raptures.

Now, speaking of grand performances, a special treat awaited theatre-goers on this very day, June 11th, 1889 - a grand gala took place at the Palais Garnier, showcasing a new, vibrant ballet choreography by Marius Petipa, La Esmeralda, set in Paris itself, and featuring music by Cesare Pugni.

You bet your pink tutus, I would have been there, swirling in my pink, glittery tutu in the audience, soaking up the magic and dancing along. After the show, there was so much buzz in Paris, and fashion boutiques had a new style trend to work with. So, what a delightful blend of art and fashion!

While the tutus have changed since those days, we see a continuation of beauty, grace, and exquisite storytelling that captures the imagination and makes every show truly unforgettable.

Now, after this magnificent tour through the heart of Parisian ballet, I need a little Parisian indulgence myself! So, join me for a cuppa and perhaps a bite of croissant (though maybe without the butter! Oh, the carbs…) while we catch up on all the latest trends in tutu fashion! And, as always, darling, remember to embrace your inner ballerina! Be fabulous, be confident, be you!

Au revoir and until next Tuesday! Remember, my dear friends, there's no outfit as empowering as a pink tutu, even for a bit of time travel fun!

XOXO, Emma
