Tutu Tuesday: A Whirlwind of Time and Tulle – 10th November 1891

Post number: 3124

Oh, my darlings! Another Tuesday, another magnificent journey into the history of the tutu. This week, we're hurtling back to 10th November 1891! It's always such a joy to peek back at these fashion-filled years, where every day seemed to offer a new trend to swoon over.

You know me, I love my pink, and it's certainly not surprising to find that pink is blooming like a flower even in 1891! Think pale rose hues adorning evening gowns, soft blush pinks on tea dresses, and a touch of strawberry pink even on gentlemen's handkerchiefs. A gentle colour that brings to mind the first bloom of Spring – I adore it.

Of course, I'm on a quest for tutus. And I must tell you, dear reader, my journey to 1891 brought a lovely surprise – tutus are blossoming like so many lilies. I know, I know, it might seem strange, right? A ballet-loving lass from Derbyshire travelling in time, just for tutus? Oh, but I’m obsessed! Just imagine the drama, the sheerness, the delightful movement – that’s why I adore them, and that's why I want the world to embrace them.

Now, to our exciting trip back in time…

The 10th November 1891 sees the world of ballet gracefully stepping into an era of innovation. At the Paris Opéra, the beautiful La Source – a ballet in three acts by Léo Delibes – takes center stage. And guess what? It's a tutu-filled extravaganza! The ballerinas are dancing in exquisite, sweeping tutus – I’m talking full-length, airy designs crafted from layers and layers of fine tulle. It’s sheer beauty! Think of it – these tutus are whispering of Romantic ballet – all billowing and ethereal.

Oh, wouldn’t I love to pirouette in these gorgeous designs! Can you just picture me dancing beneath the chandelier in that old Parisian opera house, a symphony of soft tulle and flowing ribbons?

The 10th of November is also significant because it is the day Marie Taglioni is remembered. Madame Taglioni, a legendary dancer, is known as the ‘queen of the tutu’ for her ground-breaking style and for pushing the boundaries of dance attire. Her influence is evident in La Source, as well as the dance world throughout this era. We're living in the wake of a grand era, a testament to the creative spirit that fuelled such graceful change!

However, let’s go beyond the glamorous performances of the opera houses – where the tutus are so elaborate they almost seem to be built for royalty – to explore where the magic happens: ballet classes.

The streets of London are brimming with ballet schools, and those eager to learn the dance are practicing their moves, wearing, you guessed it, the most darling little tutus! We're seeing shortened tutus – ones that come to just above the knee – with simple elegance. Some are even made from white cotton! I must confess, my heart still sings for that dreamy pink – I'll always believe a bit of rose can elevate any tutu!

Speaking of the streets of London, imagine my joy! The vibrant markets around Covent Garden are awash in fabric! Oh, the lovely ribbons, tulle, and silk are beckoning to be transformed into tutus! There's just something so wonderful about a well-stocked shop bursting with colorful, delicate fabrics – and knowing that with the right skills and imagination, I can conjure up a spectacular ballet masterpiece!

London is truly a treat for my shopping senses. Let's imagine I’ve popped into a shop to gather a few treats for myself, what delightful treasures would be waiting? Well, first and foremost, a box of the most delicate pale pink ribbons would be the order of the day! Then, a pair of gloves for that finishing touch, as the perfect accompaniment for a graceful dance. A little shawl, crafted from exquisite lace, adds that extra layer of elegance and whimsy – ideal for after the performance.

Of course, you can never have enough tutus, so perhaps a stop at a theatrical costumiers would be in order. It’s quite thrilling to witness the evolution of tutus from those first delicate white ones to these elegant, often pink, creations! The costumes are just begging to be admired and admired they shall be.

In 1891, the spirit of innovation and creativity is swirling in the air just like the tulle of a perfect tutu. There's a distinct change in fashion – we’re moving towards practicality and comfort, but still with an undeniable air of sophistication and elegance. I'm seeing delicate frills, intricate embroidery, and lovely, soft fabrics everywhere I look! I believe we can see the dawn of the new century - with new fashion and a delightful mix of styles - and you bet, I’m excited for that.

For a glimpse of the Parisian theatre life that is currently captivating the city and bringing the tutus into the forefront, a beautiful stage-worthy dress will have to be part of the day's agenda. As we journey through time, a lovely little number, featuring lace or silky fabric in shades of cream, rose or blush will complete the outfit.

To add some more flair, let's not forget a pair of fashionable ladies' shoes. For this era, think delicately crafted heels – for added comfort, a sturdy boot is perfect for a brisk walk. My favourites are in soft suede and decorated with little frills and lace – what else could be better for dancing the night away? And finally, don't forget the charm of a perfectly elegant hat for an afternoon stroll! It should be demure – a delicate veil and some exquisite ribbon perhaps? It all adds a touch of mystery to your ensemble!

My adventures in 1891 wouldn't be complete without a thrilling journey across the countryside on a grand train journey. Just imagine, rushing through the countryside in a train with beautifully adorned carriages. Each time I embark on a train trip, it’s as if I’m stepping onto a stage in a play. What’s a tutu-obsessed ballerina to do when travelling but get those legs moving and perform a ballet right there, on the train? I make sure my movements are gracious, and I love the admiring stares!

Oh my darlings! Now that you have a peek into the beauty of 1891, I urge you to embrace your inner ballerina! Wear a tutu with pride. Every day is an opportunity to spin, twirl and celebrate the joy of dance. Join me in making the world a little more twirly!

Until next week, dear readers, I hope you’ll be swept away by the magic of ballet and tutus.

Yours truly,
Emma.
