Tutu Tuesday #3218: The Ballet's Best Friend - August 29th, 1893

Hello, darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, ready to whisk you away to another historical moment in the world of ballet. This week, we're heading back to August 29th, 1893, a date bursting with sartorial excitement and the promise of graceful performances.

Grab your favourite teacup and a slice of Victoria sponge, because I'm spilling all the tea - and tutu-tastic details!

As a Derbyshire lass, I’ve always found the glamour of the London stage absolutely captivating. And oh my, on this particular August day in 1893, London was buzzing! At the esteemed Covent Garden Royal Opera House, a brand new ballet was taking centre stage. The world premiere of "The Magic Flute", a work by none other than the incredible composer, Mozart, promised a night of enchantment, magic, and yes, you guessed it, a dazzling display of tutus.

Can you picture it? The plush velvet seats, the scent of fragrant orange blossom, and the murmur of anticipation building in the theatre as the curtain rose. This, darlings, is why I love time travel – to soak in these glorious moments in ballet history!

But before we dive into the dance, let’s rewind and chat about our beloved tutus. By 1893, the tutu had truly become an integral part of the ballet scene. Gone were the days of heavy, impractical skirts! The Romantic tutu, a lighter, more whimsical creation, reigned supreme, with its shorter, billowing design. Imagine wispy layers of tulle, showcasing the graceful movements of the dancers. Absolutely enchanting!

This was a time of real experimentation for ballet costumes. The use of colour was becoming bolder and brighter. You could find dancers swirling on stage in an array of pastel shades, particularly delicate pinks, vibrant blues, and rich crimson, reflecting the stories and moods of the ballet.

As for our beloved "The Magic Flute," I'm dying to know more about the costumes worn by the ballerinas in this captivating production! It must have been a feast for the eyes! If you ever get a chance to see this delightful piece, darling, I urge you to do so – you won’t be disappointed.

To add to the magic of the occasion, imagine all the ladies dressed up in their most fashionable finery for this grand occasion! Lace, silk, velvet – you name it, it was likely a highlight of every well-dressed woman's ensemble! A stylish and perfectly placed feather boa was the icing on the cake!

But darling, there’s one thing I can’t leave out – a truly crucial element in any ballet evening in London: the afternoon tea! Tea gowns, those exquisite frocks that transformed into perfect teatime attire, were the epitome of chic, and a delicious cream tea was an absolute must! After all, what’s a day at the ballet without indulging in a little sweetness, a slice of Victoria sponge, and a piping hot cup of tea?

Now, I know you are curious about how this travelling ballerina finances all her fabulous escapades. To make these trips possible, I spend my days back in the 21st century giving enchanting performances for everyone who loves the magic of ballet. From charity balls to theatre shows, I find myself swept away in a whirlwind of dancing and glittering tutus. And that’s the best part - spreading the love for ballet, one pirouette at a time!

The beauty of this 19th century ballet world was its elegance and the way it allowed everyone to engage in something beautiful and special.

Let me know in the comments what you thought of my August 29th, 1893, escapade, and which historical ballet moments you’d like to learn more about!

Until next Tuesday, keep those tutus twirling,

Your dear Emma xox
