#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time! (Post 3282)
Greetings, my lovely tutu-lovers!
Emma here, your favourite pink-clad time-travelling ballerina, ready to whisk you back to the fascinating world of ballet history, all whilst sporting a tulle masterpiece fit for a fairytale!
This week, our journey takes us to the bustling city of Paris on the 20th November, 1894. Now, I'm all about fashion, so what's happening in the world of fashion?
Well, think elegant ladies in elegant gowns with a smattering of feathers, pearls, and maybe even a tiny bit of lace, and you're pretty much there. In the world of haute couture, everything is flowing and delicate, with the 'New Woman' look bringing a sense of practicality and movement to everyday fashion.
Of course, this isn't all about ball gowns and fashion - it's ballet history, remember? We're focusing on tutus, my darlings! And let me tell you, the story is quite dramatic, even more so than a grand finale pas de deux!
In 1894, the tutus you see on stage, with all the layers and billowing loveliness, have come a long way since the beginnings of the art form. The long, cumbersome romantic tutu, like a cloud of tulle, is being replaced by the short, tight fitting "classical" tutu we know and love.
I say, it's much easier for those big leaps and pirouettes! Think graceful movements, exquisite pointework, and a whole lot of sparkle! These shorter, lighter designs allowed dancers to really move freely, showcasing their talent to the fullest. Imagine, twirling with ease, feeling the silk brush your skin, each layer of tulle whispering a story!
Speaking of movements, our date also coincides with a historical landmark: The première of La Belle au Bois Dormant, or Sleeping Beauty, at the Opéra Garnier in Paris! That's right, ladies, Sleeping Beauty debuted on November 20th, 1894.
What did the tutus look like? Think grand and extravagant. They were designed by Léon Bakst, known for his artistic use of colours, textures and symbolism. His creations for Sleeping Beauty were some of the most iconic of his time. Can you imagine the stunning choreography with these exquisite designs? It must have been a dazzling sight to behold!
Now, for some fashion inspiration for your very own tutu adventure! Why not add a dash of this 'New Woman' style into your everyday outfits? A touch of lace or silk, paired with a gorgeous pair of boots or fashionable shoes? And don't forget, the best accessory of all, my dear friends: a gorgeous, pink tutu!
I just love imagining those ballerinas in their tutus - every plié, every graceful leap, every pirouette... it was like watching the most beautiful dance in the world! Oh, how I wish I could have been there, in that bustling Parisian theatre, wearing a pink tutu and joining the celebration.
That's all for this week, my fellow tutu-enthusiasts. I can't wait to transport you to another exciting time next Tuesday. Remember, keep your tutus fluffy and your spirits high!
Until next week, keep twirling!
Yours in tutus and time travel,
Emma
