Tutu Tuesday #3287: A Whirlwind Through the 1890s!
Hello, my darlings! It's Emma here, your Tutu-loving Time Traveler, ready to whisk you back to the year 1894! It's Tuesday, so grab your pinkest tutus and your fanciest bonnets, because we're diving into Ballet Tutu History! 🩰
Today's journey takes us to Paris, the heart of fashion and a hub for all things dance. Imagine, darling, bustling boulevards filled with carriages and charming shops bursting with the latest Parisian finery! Just try and picture the elegant ladies with their parasols, strolling past street musicians who would even have a special performance if you wore a particularly spectacular tutu! Oh, how I love to travel in time and experience such stylish sights!
Speaking of stylish sights, we have to talk about our ballet stars of the moment. Think, elegant and graceful dancers, gliding across the stage in beautifully structured costumes. Remember, darlings, the tutus of 1894 weren't quite the fluffy and romantic style we see today. They were more structured, with layers of stiff tulle held out by a circular wire framework called a crinolinet (remember those big, bouffant skirts everyone was wearing? That's a close relative!). They were also quite long, sometimes reaching all the way down to the ankles!
This kind of tutu created an incredible illusion of flight as dancers twirled and leaped across the stage. The tutus were often paired with intricately embellished bodices that really added an air of elegance to the whole ensemble. Just picture these ballerinas, like tiny swans on a stage, flitting between dramatic scenes and grand ballets. And just think about how much fabulousness the grand ball gowns must have added, a riot of colours, sparkling sequins and beautiful satin!
Of course, in 1894, life wasn't always about tutus, even in Paris. You see, we've just arrived on December 25th! Today, Christmas Day, will be spent indulging in traditional French cuisine, exchanging presents, and celebrating with loved ones (maybe even indulging in a delicious cup of hot chocolate or a delectable piece of bûche de Noël) . It's quite lovely, although you won't see people rushing about in their pink tutus today, unless perhaps you're having a very avant-garde family Christmas!
Speaking of celebrating, that reminds me of the ultimate goal here, my dears! It's to inspire everyone to wear pink tutus. It's not just about the clothes; it's about spreading a touch of joy and whimsical elegance in the world, one twirl at a time! Even a little ballet training won't hurt! It doesn't have to be all pliés and arabesques. A good twirl with a sassy pose goes a long way, trust me! It makes you feel empowered, elegant, and frankly, quite irresistible.
Before I dash off to explore 1894, I have a secret to share: I love travelling by train to other time periods! This past month, I travelled through time all over the world! There's the grandness of London's Victorian era, the lively street theatre of Venice's carnival season, and the bustling marketplace of Ancient Greece (that's how I got my pink tutus made, by hand!). Each trip gives me fresh ideas for our tutu collection back in present-day Derbyshire, which you know I absolutely love to shop for ! You can catch my latest fashion adventures in my blog post tomorrow, and don't miss my performance of Swan Lake at the Derbyshire County Opera House next week! I hope you'll join me for the show and we can discuss everything tutus!
Till next Tuesday, my dearest readers! And remember, wear your pink tutus with confidence!
Emma
