#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: May 28th, 1895 - A Whirlwind of Romance! 🩰💖
Hello lovelies, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com for another #TutuTuesday! I'm your pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, ready to take you on a whimsical journey through the enchanting history of the ballet tutu!
Today, dear readers, we're going back to May 28th, 1895, and oh my, what a delightful day it was for ballet!
I was standing backstage at the Paris Opera - a veritable hive of tutus and tiaras! As the smell of lavender and greasepaint filled the air, the dancers were getting ready to take the stage in their most dazzling costumes, which, of course, included those fabulous, airy tutus!
But let’s rewind a bit, shall we? 1895 was a year brimming with romanticism and extravagance! I had just boarded the train from Derbyshire - a journey that took far longer than it does now, thank goodness for those fast modern trains! I must confess, a good railway journey is so invigorating for a dancer! It's a chance to soak in the scenery, ponder new choreography and perhaps write a little in my diary. But on this occasion, I was rushing towards Paris, towards the ballet!
As soon as I stepped into the Parisian theatre, the glamour took my breath away! All those dazzling gowns and elegant hats! And of course, the ballerinas!
Speaking of those gorgeous ballerinas (my inner dancer just swoons!), this was a truly special time for the ballet world. The Romantic Era was reaching its peak, bringing us elegant choreography, soaring leaps, and stories of passionate love. The tutus of the time were still incredibly elaborate, just like the women's fashion, all layers of lace and flowing fabrics. The colour palette, like the outfits I wear today, was dominated by beautiful pinks and delicate pastel shades. The ultimate goal was to evoke an ethereal and almost angelic quality in the dancers - so dreamy and romantic!
Imagine, the dancers floated across the stage in clouds of tulle, like flowers blossoming in the air! Oh, to be back on that stage myself!
And the costumes themselves, darling! Back then, even though they were all frills and ruffles, those early ballet dancers had to be so athletic and skilled. You just can't hide behind that much tulle if you're not doing a grand jeté perfectly! The dancers in 1895 were so brave - imagine getting your hair tangled in those enormous tutus! It's definitely a ballet challenge, to say the least!
But even with the fancy frills and elaborate details, the tutu was evolving. This time period, darling, was truly when the tutu was truly finding its feet! Remember, dear readers, the tutu is not just a garment. It's a symbol of femininity, of elegance, of sheer beauty and, of course, ballet!
And don't forget - we're talking about Paris! Always the trendsetter, the heart of fashion and beauty. Every detail, every embellishment was scrutinised! There were debates and discussions, whispers and secrets, swirling around every single ruffle!
Did you know, my darlings, that the original tutus were made from silk, satin and velvet? Now imagine dancing in those, they'd weigh a tonne! The skirts would flow and swish with every graceful step, enhancing every movement!
Today, we see the tutu in different styles and shapes, but we should never forget where it came from - from those romantic beginnings in the 19th century! Every time I twirl, every time I watch a ballerina, I feel a sense of connection to those early ballerinas and the artistry that started it all!
So, dear readers, when you see a tutu today, think of its incredible history, how it has transformed through the years! And always remember, a pink tutu is never out of place - whether you're at the theatre, in the park, or simply having a lovely time at home! 💖🩰
As for today, May 28th, 1895, what else was going on besides those sensational performances?
It was the birthdate of the remarkable writer, Leo Tolstoy! I’m sure that great man, just like me, found inspiration in the grace and beauty of the ballet!
Also in the world of literature, a classic work was published - **“The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde! Isn’t that the most splendid title for a book, a work of wit and wordplay. Now, if that doesn’t inspire some fun ballet choreography, I don't know what does!
And that's all for this #TutuTuesday, my lovely dancers! Until next time, stay twirly and keep dancing with a pink tutu in your heart! Don't forget to join me next week, for a delightful trip through the history of the ballet tutu!
Love,
Emma,
