#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1896-03-17 - A Trip to Paris!

Hello my dearest tutu-loving friends! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutu, fashion, and the wonder of ballet! This is Emma here, your bubbly ballerina blogger from the heart of Derbyshire, England, ready to whisk you away on another #TutuTuesday adventure through the history of our beloved ballet costume. Today's journey takes us back to 1896-03-17, a date that, whilst perhaps not etched in your calendars, is oh so important for the tutu, thanks to my favourite place on the whole wide world: Paris.

And let me tell you, the Parisian fashion scene of 1896 was utterly bewitching! The grand boulevards were filled with fashionable folk flaunting their latest designs - the latest silhouettes, fabrics, and accessories, all inspired by the elegance and grace of our favourite dance form! Just picturing it makes me want to whip out my trusty sewing machine and have a go at some vintage-inspired creations. I wonder if I could recreate the flowing bell shapes of the skirts, and maybe add some of those dramatic butterfly sleeves? Ooh, darling, imagine the flutter as I dance!

But before we delve into the latest fashions, we must rewind the clock. See, even back then, ballet was an integral part of Parisian life. The Palais Garnier, *that iconic temple to the arts, stood majestic on the Rue Scribe. I could practically feel the energy buzzing within those hallowed halls, could you? The sound of tapping shoes on polished wood, the gasp of the audience, the flutter of a ballerina’s *feather boa, oh, it’s pure magic!

As we step inside this grand opera house, imagine this (because you'd never have caught me missing a performance if I'd been there then): The stage lights illuminate a flurry of white tulle, billowing with each graceful step. This is not your standard ballet tutu just yet - this is the "romantics tutu," *still in its heyday, that flowed in romantic waves with each graceful gesture. I have a *lovely antique romantics tutu, by the way, from a delightful boutique in Notting Hill! Imagine dancing in such a delicate garment, your steps gliding like clouds, a breathtaking symphony of light, music, and movement! This is what it all comes down to - that breathtaking harmony between the artist and their creation, isn't it?

Now, before you think we're all about waltzing in dreamy white fluff, remember - 1896 wasn't all Victorian romanticism! Fashion, as always, is an ever-evolving dance. A dramatic transformation was on the horizon, my darlings, ready to sweep the ballet world off its feet! I bet you're eager to hear about it - hold on to your hats, it’s about to get exciting!

But first, a little something for my devoted readers: You know how much I love my pink tutu. Well, there's something special for all my lovely Pink-tutu subscribers! I'm giving away a vintage ballerina locket! If you want a chance to own a bit of this fabulous era, all you have to do is subscribe to www.pink-tutu.com. But you better hurry - it's first-come, first-served!

Let's step back to 1896-03-17... What happened on this particular day, you ask?

Well, in this charming corner of Paris, a remarkable, avant-garde ballet titled " L'Enfant Prodigue" (The Prodigal Son) debuted. This isn't just a normal ballet, oh no, this is revolutionary! This ballet premiered something groundbreaking... A new silhouette in the ballet world. The tutu, the foundation of the dancer’s outfit, had a *completely new shape! This time, it’s short, cropped at the hips - imagine that! This *short design, now called the "classical tutu," *wasn’t quite ready for its solo performance, it was used to compliment other costumes, but even a *glimpse of its potential had the audience in raptures!

And why? Because it was practical and functional. This was ballet ready for twirls and leaps and high kicksthe classical tutu, an elegant, but undeniably powerful look that liberated the movement. The beauty of dance finally freed! My fellow tutu-lovers, the history of our favourite piece of dance attire was beginning to take a sharp turn. The new shape provided increased freedom and movement, allowing ballerinas to really soar and twirl, making their movements a thrilling spectacle. Now that's what I call a bold statement! I’m dying to get my hands on one of these and have a go myself. Can't you imagine the graceful pirouettes, the mesmerizing extensions? Talk about captivating! This revolutionary design truly heralded a new era, paving the way for the modern tutus we all know and love!

As you can imagine, this was big news in the world of dance, attracting attention and sparking controversy. This revolutionary approach took the dance world by storm! Everyone wanted a piece of this exciting and energetic new style! Think about it: a glimpse of a woman’s leg! Now, that was a daring statement for a time when ladies had to cover themselves up. Talk about a fashion game-changer, pushing boundaries and daring the world to appreciate the beauty of movement in its purest form. That's what we do in this business - push the limits of expression! Who’s to say we wouldn’t see pink tutus as part of this trend in the future? Imagine how fabulous a pink tutu with those amazing high kicks would look, the light catching its pleats… Absolutely divine!

It wasn’t just the tutu’s appearance that drew thunderous applause. The story itself, this tale of youthful rebellion, resonated with the Paris of 1896! This playful dance, telling a daring story of youth and redemption, felt extraordinary. Just like a dancer embracing a new look, the Parisian audience was open to this vibrant, unconventional story on stage! This is where dance, fashion, and life intertwined, pushing boundaries and sparking new conversations!

Just imagine this. The air alive with excited chatter as fashionable patrons sip their champagne. A hushed anticipation before the curtain rises. Then, the first notes of the score - oh, darling, it makes me shiver! And when the first dancer, adorned in the new shortened tutu, takes to the stage, I bet there’s a gasp, a silence, followed by thunderous applause. Can’t you practically smell the excitement, the intoxicating aroma of Parisian joie de vivre? It’s almost enough to make you want to pack your suitcase and hop aboard a train to this enchanting city! I may just have to do that…

You see, darling, the 1890s were a thrilling decade for tutus! A shift was in the air, and Paris, that fashion capital of the world, embraced it with open arms. A time for revolution and a new era of design that was sweeping the globe and forever transforming how we view ballet tutus, making them even more dramatic and exciting! Just think, you could have seen it all!
