Tutu Tuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History - 12th May 1896!
#TutuTuesday #3359
Hello my darlings! Emma here, ready to take you on another thrilling trip through time! This week, we're dancing our way back to 12th May 1896 - a glorious day filled with the most fabulous fashion trends and some seriously exciting ballet performances. Let's get swirling!
I'm writing this from the very heart of the ballet world – Paris, of course! It’s truly a delight to be in the city of love, and I'm sporting the most fabulous pink tulle tutu – think whispers of blush and a generous layer of flounce, the perfect choice for a Parisian afternoon.
Now, let's travel back in time together…
Imagine you're sitting in the Grand Opera House, Paris. The air buzzes with anticipation as the orchestra tunes up, the chatter of the audience is punctuated by the clinking of champagne glasses. The stage lights flicker, and…
… enter the stars of the day, the ballerinas! Gone are the long, cumbersome skirts of yesteryear. Instead, the ladies are whirling in the most exquisite short tutus imaginable, revealing their limbs in all their graceful beauty!
This style of tutu is what we now know as the “Romantic” tutu, named for the era of ballet in which it emerged. They’re shorter, lighter, and even more whimsical than the earlier, heavier versions. They allow the dancers to truly fly! Imagine a cloud of delicate tulle – the most gorgeous shades of pale pink and white - dancing in the air!
The influence of Romantic era ballet on fashion cannot be underestimated. This short, airy tutu style revolutionised not just the ballet world but the world of fashion too. It influenced women’s dresses and empowered the women wearing them to move with freedom and elegance. It’s no surprise that Paris, the heart of style and culture, embraced this fashion with such fervour.
Speaking of Paris! What better way to end a day of ballet than with a delicious, fashionable shopping trip? The streets of Paris were a visual feast even back in 1896, and my pink tutu is practically a siren song for shop owners to offer me their latest wares!
Don't you just love the way the history of fashion, particularly the world of dance, plays out? I see echoes of this airy, tutu-inspired style in contemporary dance wear and even everyday fashion. Even today, that dreamy, almost cloud-like quality of tulle continues to captivate!
Before I take off for my next adventure (the train is my chariot, after all – what fashion-forward time-traveling ballerina can resist a splendid journey? ), I'd like to ask: Are there any specific ballet moments or eras you’d like me to visit? Leave a comment and I’ll be sure to add your suggestion to my time travel itinerary!

Until next time, darling, keep twirling!
