#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: September 28th, 1897 (Post #3431)

Bonjour, darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! I hope you're all settled in with a nice cuppa and a fluffy pink blanket, because today we're whisking back in time, to a delightful little date in history!

Oh, darling! Where do I even begin?! 1897, it's simply breathtaking! Imagine! The sheer romance of it all, the grandeur of fashion, and those decadent Victorian dance halls. It makes my heart beat just a little faster. Honestly, my little pink heart bursts with glee thinking about the world we're going to explore today.

Now, where were we...? Oh, yes! This week, my dears, we're taking a little trip back to September 28th, 1897. You may be asking yourselves: "Why, Emma, why this date?" And that, my darlings, is because, today marks the date when our beloved tutu began to truly take its form, with a very special event. It's quite the momentous occasion, even by my ballet-obsessed standards.

Do you want to know the secret, darling?

September 28th, 1897 marks the day when the first full-length ballet, called The Sleeping Beauty, had its world premiere! Just think, all those gorgeous swirling tutus on the stage, bringing a magical tale to life! Just the very thought sends shivers down my spine with excitement! It was presented in St Petersburg, darling. I'm just so envious of anyone who was fortunate enough to see it in those days! The glamour, the costumes, the dance - just divine!

To give you a little context, my lovelies, we're not just talking about any ordinary dance here. The choreography was by Marius Petipa, and you all know how much I love Marius Petipa - truly the master of the tutu! You see, my loves, that's the reason it was a "full-length ballet." They danced all night - imagine the effort! Not that our tutus make it difficult, you know, I love my tutu-y days... Oh, my, this is going to be one exciting blog post. Now, back to the matter in hand - The Sleeping Beauty! It featured a delightful and graceful ballerina, Princess Aurora, clad in the most stunning tulle you could imagine - oh, my heart skips a beat! She truly made that tutus fly! Such elegance, such poise, and so much twirling. Absolutely divine! And did you know this ballet was a spectacular five acts? Simply fabulous!

Now, of course, since it was the very first performance, I must be discreet - I can't share every little detail - especially with my secret time traveling self! That’s our little secret. But, imagine, a delicate, airy tutu floating and twirling, swirling and spinning, each movement a story in itself. So romantic, don’t you think? The Sleeping Beauty truly cemented the tutu’s place on the ballet stage and became the inspiration for countless other dance productions, paving the way for beautiful dance classics and gorgeous tutus as we know them today.

It just fills me with delight, knowing how significant a role The Sleeping Beauty had in creating that special magic in ballet and putting tutus at the heart of it all. And it's not just about the beauty, dear hearts. It's about the symbolism - about the spirit, the energy, the boundless freedom it embodies. And the wonderful history behind the tutu, with all its captivating stories of bravery, magic and elegance - it makes my heart sing with joy, don't you agree?

After seeing the performance, darling, I must admit, I just had to dash into town! And you won’t believe what I found, my lovelies - the most gorgeous millinery shops in all of St. Petersburg! They simply overflowed with stunning creations! Feathers and bonnets and so many sparkling embellishments - a veritable symphony of styles.

Oh, darling! What was I saying? It seems I’m a bit distracted! As you all know, I’m such a sucker for shopping, you know. Speaking of beautiful shopping... Have you all seen that marvelous new pink shop down by the high street in Derby? I’m obsessed, simply obsessed. I’ll have to blog about it another day, however - we're in the midst of the gorgeous ballet world!

Now, where was I? Ah yes! You know, there's something quite wonderful about the tutu's ability to express all emotions. Whether it’s the lighthearted grace of The Sleeping Beauty, the fierce spirit of The Firebird, or the delicate yearning of Giselle, it can tell so many stories through movement.

But remember, the tutu is not just for professionals, my lovelies! It’s for all of us to enjoy! Think of a tutu not as just a dance outfit but as an expression of our own joy and freedom - that's what I love about tutus. It's an invitation to dance, to celebrate, and to embrace our inner ballerinas.

I think I need a good twirl! So until next week, darling, I leave you with a thought - why not slip into a lovely pink tutu today, and let it inspire your own unique dance? Don’t be shy. Who knows where it may take you?

Until next time,

Emma

P.S. Oh darling, you all know I’m going to #TutuTuesday: A Little Bit Of Shopping and share some gorgeous pictures from this magical world. Until then, have a great week!
