#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – February 22nd 1898 – Post #3452

Hello my lovely tutu enthusiasts!

It's Tuesday again, which means it's time to whisk you away on another journey through the history of our beloved ballet tutus! This week, we're stepping back to the sparkling year of 1898, a year bursting with exquisite artistry and a dash of Victorian charm.

Now, grab your fanciest cuppa and your fluffiest pink tutu, darling, as we head on a whirlwind adventure back to a world of gaslight and glamour. Imagine: London's cobbled streets lit with twinkling gaslamps, the grand halls of Covent Garden Theatre thrumming with the applause of the upper crust, and we're on the cusp of a magnificent ballet performance. Can you feel the magic in the air, dears?

I have a confession to make. When I travel to 1898, it's not just for the tutu inspiration (although there is plenty!), it's for the shopping! This time period is just full of luxurious silk and lace, and, well, a girl can't resist, can she? I swear, I spend more time at Harrods than I do practicing my pirouettes.

Now, let's chat about tutus. Picture this, 1898. The chignon reigns supreme! Hair styled to perfection with a bun atop the head, cascading ribbons, or intricate braids with oodles of sparkly pins – a vision of Victorian beauty, if ever I did see one! And, of course, what better way to show off such elegant hairstyles than with the grace of a ballerina gracefully gliding across the stage?

And as we turn our attention to the costumes, 1898 was a glorious year for tutus! Gone are the overly frilly affairs, the era of grand ballet, it seems, favoured a softer, more elegant approach to tutu design. The romantics were making their mark, the movement was graceful and expressive, just as a true ballet dancer should be! Think layered tulle, delicate patterns and fabrics that flowed like a summer breeze - breathtakingly beautiful, wouldn’t you say?

Imagine yourself watching a performance – the music swelling, the dancers moving with incredible precision and a whole lotta charm. That’s the true spirit of this time!

Now, for those of you extraordinarily interested in some historical detail, 1898 was especially known for:

- The Rise of Ballet Russes: Yes, it all started back then! While we're not in Russia yet, the seeds of this incredible ballet company were being sown around this time! And imagine the tutu styles – they had a certain je ne sais quoi that set the whole world on fire. Think vibrant colours, opulent costumes, and bold movements – all set against an enchanting backdrop.

- The Swan Lake: A classic we all know and adore! Even back in 1898, Swan Lake had its captivating debut in London, causing a sensation that spread far and wide, just like a feathered tutu! I bet I'm not the only one who wants to immediately throw on their tutu and swirl around the living room while the magical Swan Lake soundtrack plays.

-The Popularity of the Pas de Deux : If you’re new to the world of ballet, it simply means “a dance for two”. It was truly a heartthrob of an element in 1898. Can you imagine the grace and passion? One minute you have the ballerina on the pointe of her toes, then, suddenly, her partner is lifting her high in the air, swooning audiences around the world.

- A Big Fat Fashion Trend: Oh darling, the beauty of Victorian fashion is so decadent and chic. I’m a sucker for a pretty frock and this is just pure visual delight, trust me! And to add to this gorgeous trend, you’ll spot these fabulous ball gowns in the theatre! I love how women took the elegant ballgown and transformed it into their go-to theatre garb - they just have a way with fashion!

And, drumroll please – on this very date in 1898:

  • The Belle Epoque reached its peak The term ‘Belle Époque’ – oh la la! In this glamorous era, ballet really thrived in France! It became an escape, a journey into a magical world where artists flourished and elegance prevailed.

  • In a far away place - The American Ballet Theater was being dreamed up! Yes, I know it might be 50 years off but I always love to travel into the future to get a peek! This American ballet company later grew to become a powerhouse, giving American dancers a place to twirl and be seen, and bless them, they do not disappoint!

And that's all, folks! *So there you have it, * a glimpse into the enchanting world of ballet in 1898. Remember to post your #TutuTuesday pics on the pink-tutu.com forum. And don't forget, darling, there’s magic to be found everywhere – just remember to bring your inner ballerina and let your heart dance.

Until next time, my dears! Let your light shine brightly and keep twirling!

Lots of love and tutu good vibes,

Emma

P.S. Did I mention I picked up an absolutely splendid piece of silk ribbon in 1898 that’s going to be a magnificent addition to a brand new pink tutu, I promise you! Just wait and see...
