#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History, Post 3461 – 26th April 1898 – A Trip to La Scala!
Bonjour mes chéries! Emma here, ready to whisk you away to the glorious world of tutus, and a little history too!
It's Tuesday, which means it's time for another dose of #TutuTuesday! Today we’re venturing back to 26th April 1898, a date brimming with fabulous ballet history and one that got my pink tutu practically bouncing off the carriage during my last time-hopping adventure. This week's travel brought me all the way to Milan, the centre of fashionable flair, and of course, the legendary Teatro alla Scala. This opera house, as opulent as a peacock's plumage, is simply divine. It's the heart of the ballet world in this time and its history just begs for a ballet shoe clickety-clack!
The star of the show, a graceful beauty named Carlotta Zambelli, was a captivating performer and so admired by ballet patrons that she was hailed the ‘Prima Ballerina Assoluta' of La Scala. It's like the most fabulous dance prize, a feather in any dancer's cap, wouldn't you agree?
I’ve seen some stunning costumes on my travels this week and there were more layers of frills on the dancers' tutus than a feather boa at a vintage clothing store! The design of ballet tutus at this time was all about volume, the wider the skirt the more romantic and dreamy the ballerina seemed to appear. You can see that there's an evolving desire to express grace and flight, much like my own pink tutu helps me express my joy.
And I found a charming little shop by the opera house with some exquisite fabrics and trims! Imagine a soft and shimmery fabric the shade of a pale blush rose and beautiful, intricate lace with an ethereal aura – they make my imagination run wild for possible new tutu designs, my dearest tutu fans.
Today the style is all about romance, flow, and that airy dream-like quality, exactly like what I love in a tutu! But it was the chatter I overheard after the performance that really made this trip truly memorable. The patrons were raving about the ballet's costumes. A lot of them were admiring the length, volume and movement of the tutus and were just captivated by the grace and elegance of the dancers.
Let's be honest - what better way to see such a legendary stage and the grace and elegance of such iconic ballerinas, than in a pink tutu? After all, I am all about wearing the color pink with every little opportunity I get! My dear pink tutus help me express a joyous feeling, don’t you agree? It’s almost as if we’re dancing with history itself!
The only downside to traveling back in time is finding somewhere to store a collection of pink tutus! Well, it would be easier to find a new travel method instead of trying to find space for my overflowing tutu closet – maybe a hot air balloon next time? It's certainly a challenge to store all of these delicate tutus. You can't exactly chuck a tutu into a laundry basket without it ending up a bit rumpled!
What are your thoughts? Let's get a lively conversation going in the comment section below! Let me know which ballets and tutu styles are your favourites. Have you ever dreamed of wearing a pink tutu, my darlings? You'll see in my next blog post that even the most shy person in the world can dare to wear a tutu in pink!
Don't forget to join me again next Tuesday for another fabulous adventure into the world of #TutuTuesday, where history meets fashion.
