#TutuTuesday: A Glimpse into Ballet's Pink Past - 18th October, 1898! 🩰💖
Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet, www.pink-tutu.com! It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for another thrilling installment of #TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History, and I'm positively thrilled to whisk you back to the wonderful world of dance – gasp – in 1898! This week, we're taking a peek into a time when the tutu was evolving from its whimsical, flowing form into something even more extravagant and showstopping!
As a budding ballerina myself (and avid time traveler, wink wink), there's no better place to be than Paris, the very epicentre of fashion and the ballet world! This week, I hopped onto the Orient Express, my darling companion in these exciting excursions, and headed straight to the majestic Palais Garnier, the glorious home of the Paris Opera Ballet. I just couldn't resist being here for the big unveiling! The Parisian theatre scene was abuzz with excitement about the first performance of 'Le Sacre du Printemps' (The Rite of Spring) by the Ballet Russes. This groundbreaking, scandalous masterpiece, choreographed by the bold Vaslav Nijinsky, became famous for its unorthodox steps, powerful rhythm and … let's just say a little controversy. I, however, thought it was truly avant-garde. Even though some audience members found the music and movement shocking, I was completely entranced! And you know me – when a new ballet comes to town, I simply must know everything about it, from the music to the costumes to the inspiration. This performance featured revolutionary designs, including short, almost skirtless tutus with a more dramatic, layered effect. Talk about turning heads! The bold new direction this piece showcased had an immense influence on the evolution of dance and tutus alike.
So, while you might be wearing a delightful fluffy tulle tutu today, back then, the trend was definitely towards something a tad more "feathered and fierce". Remember the importance of research, darlings. The dance world always embraces innovation, so embracing new styles is just as much a part of the tutu's evolution as the classic shape we adore. I think I may be adding some modern, streamlined silhouettes into my own wardrobe. My friends tell me it’s “so chic”. And to think, I got the inspiration for my latest designs from a Parisian theatre! How exciting, wouldn’t you say?
And to add to my delightful day, a quick stop by Worth's house of fashion on Rue de la Paix, one of the top places for dressmaking and couture in Paris, revealed something truly dazzling. I’m not usually one for extravagance, but some of these designs would almost make me want to trade in my trusty pink tutu – almost! We’re talking intricate layers of lace, feathers, and velvet, oh, and a bit of pink of course! I couldn’t leave without some beautiful satin ribbons and delicate floral accents for my own little pink tutu touch. Imagine a simple, but very beautiful, ivory dress – think empire waist and a light tulle overlay for a hint of whimsy – but finished with a pink ribbon cinched at the waist. You can trust me to put a beautiful, bold and beautiful pink twist on any vintage style!
Now, my loves, you might be thinking, "How did Emma, with her boundless love for pink, travel all the way to Paris?" Well, it's a little secret I’m happy to share, darlings – I time travel! My love for ballet, and yes, my beloved tutus, give me the strength and magic I need to slip through the portal and witness incredible history, both near and far! Oh, and don't forget, it all starts with that twinkle in your eyes and the positive energy of wanting to wear the most glorious pink tutu!
Fun Fact: Did you know that October 18th, 1898 was also the day that another amazing artistic achievement, The King's Opera House, opened in the grand city of Melbourne, Australia? Imagine, a stunning new theatre in Australia where people can come together and experience the magical world of dance – a testament to the beauty and elegance that this art form embodies. Isn't it magical, darlings? It warms my heart to see how far our passion for dance extends across the world.
As for me, it’s time to jet set again – after all, a tutu enthusiast never rests. My next trip? Italy! Oh, the excitement of exploring more hidden gems of ballet history. Be sure to check back next Tuesday, because you're guaranteed an enchanting #TutuTuesday! Remember, my lovelies, it's all about that magical twinkle in your eyes and the irresistible, beautiful allure of pink, and most of all, my sweet, delicious lovelies, don’t forget your tutu!
Much love and graceful twirls,
Emma
