Tutu Tuesday: #3501 A Peek at the Past - January 31st, 1899
Oh my darling readers, can you believe it’s January 31st already? How time does fly! Welcome back to another Tuesday of Pink-Tutu delights as I whisk you off on another trip through time. Today’s stop is a glorious little journey back to January 31st, 1899. Isn’t that just utterly delightful?
Now, picture this. Imagine me, decked out in a fabulous, billowing pink tulle tutu – a symphony of ruffles and elegance – and stepping off a steam engine, the very air filled with the intoxicating smell of coal and the exciting whoosh of escaping steam. We're right in the heart of London, my darlings! You know I simply adore a bit of London. I have a penchant for tea shops, those grand department stores and – of course – those fabulous theatres. Today, the Royal Opera House is calling my name, my dears! I simply can’t wait to see what magical spectacle awaits me! But before we step inside the grandeur of Covent Garden, let’s get down to business with the grand history of the tutu itself.
You see, around this date, darling, tutus were starting to look much like the tutus you and I might see today. It’s a glorious progression of graceful evolution from those long, billowing skirts of old! You know I’ve shared stories about those first days of tutus – how they were more akin to full-length dresses of silk or gauze, a whisper of fabric meant to hide rather than showcase the magic of movement. The French ballerina Marie Taglioni in her glorious, flowing tutu in "La Sylphide" made history, but our modern, shorter, ballerina tutu was beginning to take shape right here! Think of this: 1899 was just the beginning of a fashion revolution. And isn’t fashion simply thrilling?
Imagine, those beautiful, pale, satin-lined skirts slowly becoming shorter and more streamlined. This is the dawn of the iconic, single layer skirt. And think, dear ones, all for the sole reason to showcase that breathtaking ballet beauty. To dance with the glorious freedom of movement. Imagine a ballerina whirling and leaping with grace and beauty.
The tutu has gone through so many changes throughout history, darling! It is quite literally the embodiment of time and movement, all within the delicate beauty of layered tulle. The evolution from those early flowing skirts into these exquisitely cut, sculpted designs is simply dazzling, don’t you think?
I must admit, there are many stories to tell of those early ballerinas who would dare to make even a single stitch change. A bit of lace or silk sewn on to their costume, a bit of trimming - they knew even then how important that little detail was, a whisper of fashion in a sea of tradition.
I, my dear readers, feel so fortunate to be on this journey, this ballet-tastic voyage of history. It's not always smooth sailing - a bit of travel through time has its own adventures! - but the discovery of it all – it's simply enchanting, and you know I’ve adored telling you all about it every single Tuesday!
Speaking of which, that enchanting performance is calling my name. I can practically feel the electricity of the music, the magic of those graceful leaps and elegant steps that set my heart racing with excitement. Think of how enchanting the show must have been all those years ago, my dear. Such artistry! So much history within every graceful leap, and what beauty within every flutter of those fabulous tutu skirts. Just exquisite, darling!
Before I disappear into the historical magic of the stage – be sure to tell me what your favorite tutu story is. It could be anything – maybe your first ballet class, or a wonderful performance you saw! Whatever it is, I adore hearing about the wonderful world of ballet from your perspective, too.
Do not forget to follow me on Pink-Tutu, darling! I’m always happy to be sharing my discoveries with my dearest readers. Until next Tuesday, don’t forget - always keep that beautiful Pink Tutu energy flowing in your lives!
P.S - A few more notes from my little time travel adventure:
I’ve been seeing all the delightful advertisements for those stunning corsets. Oh, I adore the lace and frills! What an era for such fashionable fun, indeed! Even in my darling Derbyshire, I think these fashion delights would go quite well!
I stumbled upon a lovely little tea shop this morning. The smells were delicious! It reminds me of my grandma's house and she was always wearing lovely ruffles! How exciting to see that trend carried on through time!
Did you know this month’s popular song is 'Just a Weary Wanderer' – It sounds like a perfect song for those elegant movements of the ballet. Such a romance for that delicate fluttering of a ballerina’s dress, don't you think?
Today's fashion news was about the "Queen of fashion" Marie Antoinette of France. Even so long ago, we see the history of how fashion influenced everything and how it all starts with those delightful frills, lace and yes, my dears, it is absolutely the tutu as well. The evolution, my dears, is fascinating.
And remember, dear readers - the next time you see a tutu, you can’t help but imagine the rich history behind it, the dedication, artistry, and elegance it embodies. It’s a time capsule, and we all have a touch of those beautiful dancers in us - a little sparkle within!
I shall continue to search for all the tutu treasures hidden away within history – a ballet time traveller always needs a bit of magic! Now, back to the show – those exquisite movements and tutus are calling!
