#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - May 30th, 1899 - A Whirlwind of Romance!
Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, your resident tutu-loving time traveler, back with another #TutuTuesday post! Today, we're going to twirl back to May 30th, 1899, and see what the world of ballet was up to! This is post number 3518, by the way, which is quite a lot of tutu talk, isn't it?
So, grab a cuppa, put on your prettiest frock (and maybe even a little pink tutu, why not? ;) ) and let's have a giggle through this history of tutus!
Now, 1899, my dears, was a simply glorious time for the ballet. Paris was, as always, the center of all things elegant, and the ballerinas were dazzling audiences with their grace and poise. But there was something quite new brewing…romance!
Oh yes, my fellow tutufarians, 1899 was the year of love, where ballets weren't just beautiful performances, they were full-blown stories of hearts aflutter and grand declarations!
Imagine this: a beautiful princess caught in a tangled web of duty, love, and daring escape. Or maybe a tragic tale of forbidden love, where two hearts yearn for each other against all odds! These weren't just ballets, darling, they were emotional roller coasters!
The star of this particular day, my dears, was Anna Pavlova! Yes, you know, the famous dancer with the delicate movements and exquisite stage presence. This beautiful lady was making waves across Europe with her talent and charm, performing for adoring audiences in grand theatres all across the continent! I'm sure the entire city of Vienna was breathless after her show at the Vienna Opera House - it was a truly remarkable moment in ballet history!
But you know, romance wasn't the only thing in the air! Fashion, of course, always has a starring role in my world. The dresses, my darlings, were simply stunning! All flowing silks and layers of tulle, adorned with gorgeous beading and elaborate patterns. I almost couldn't handle the fabulousness! The ballerina's tutus, oh my, they were quite a spectacle! They weren't just those delicate little numbers we see in class, you know. These tutus were larger, full-bodied, and crafted from layers of billowing silk and tulle, a true celebration of all things frilly and fancy!
Imagine the sensation as a dancer took the stage, a cloud of tulle and fabric, soaring gracefully with each pirouette and grand jeté! Just divine!
And don't forget about the colours, my dear tutus! It was the time for romantic hues. Think lush velvety greens, the shimmering warmth of gold, and of course, plenty of exquisite pink! You're not going to believe this, but they were even making pink ballet shoes! Imagine it! Pink from head to toe, the ultimate in ballet elegance. I think my heart is about to skip a beat, and I might have to add this look to my upcoming timeline adventure.
While I was doing some shopping at the elegant Maison Blanche in Paris, (the fanciest dressmaker, I must say!), I found an exquisite silk ribbon for a tutu! This incredible blush-pink colour had the most perfect amount of shimmer. And you won't believe what they told me about it! This ribbon is called 'Rose de la Paix,' 'The Rose of Peace,' my darlings! How perfect is that? Such a sweet and gentle name, almost as delightful as the ballerina twirling with it!
Imagine all these gorgeous outfits, stunning ballerinas, and magical music coming together to create this spectacular world of beauty and grace. My darlings, it was a true moment in ballet history, and I can’t wait to keep traveling back and share more enchanting moments with you.
But tell me! Have you ever seen a romantic ballet? Or what is your favourite type of ballet? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! And remember, wear your tutu proudly, even if it's only on your imaginary dance floor, and don't forget to catch our next #TutuTuesday adventure!
Until next time, stay fabulous!
Your Time-Traveling Tutu Guru,
Emma.
P.S. I have the most delightful plans to travel back to the grand opening of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in London, and to see how those legendary ballerina’s like the lovely Fanny Elssler looked. I’ll tell you all about it next Tuesday, be sure to pop back then! You won't want to miss it!
