#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - October 24th, 1899 - A Pink Delight!
Welcome, darling tutus! It's your girl Emma, your very own tutu-wearing time traveller, back again for another #TutuTuesday, bringing you a peek into the delightful world of the tutu through the ages! Today, we're twirling our way back to October 24th, 1899, where tutus were in their full, fabulous bloom!
Now, my dears, it's post number 3539 in my Ballet Tutu History series – you could say I’m rather passionate about these feathered wonders. You'll find my entire collection of Tutu-Tuesday posts, chock-full of history, trends, and general tutu joy on the www.pink-tutu.com website. Don't be shy, pop by for a look, I promise a fabulous time.
Speaking of fabulous, I'm actually right here in Paris today, perched at my usual spot at Café de la Paix, a heavenly concoction of hazelnut and vanilla in my hand (a treat is absolutely essential for a time traveller, wouldn’t you agree?). It's utterly enchanting to be here in the City of Lights. My, the fashion! They just don’t make men like the French, you know? (And the pastries, oh my!)
But back to our date, 1899. This year, my dear tutus, saw the absolute zenith of the romantic ballet. Oh, imagine the swishes and flourishes of the iconic Giselle, performed across Europe – simply magical! We're talking fluffy tutus in the most beautiful shades of blush, pale lemon, and a sprinkle of delicate peach – such beauty! They might have been longer then, more romantic and flowing, but their elegance was undeniable!
You see, by 1899, tutus had really come into their own. They were no longer simply undergarments! No, my dear friends, they were a full-fledged piece of fashion – and a magnificent one at that!
Of course, this doesn't mean all dancers wore tutus everywhere all the time! Ballet was a much more formal art then, even a little bit precious – something that definitely adds to its charm! You’d never dream of catching a ballerina on a Parisian cobblestone in a tutu back then. In 1899, tutus belonged to the theatre, the ballet stage. They were a statement, a dramatic symbol of beauty and movement.
But I can just imagine a scene: It’s evening, the air is alive with excitement, and everyone’s in their best finery. I imagine ladies with their bustles and petticoats and gentlemen with their crisp suits. My pink tutu stands out, it’s just so chic. I am here to see a show at the Opera Garnier – the ultimate stage for tutus! Just thinking about all the wonderful dancing and gorgeous costumes sends a thrill down my spine!
I, of course, managed to find a lovely pink dress, perfectly suited for the occasion. You can never go wrong with a touch of pink, especially when exploring the past!
Of course, my trip back in time to 1899 wouldn’t be complete without attending a delightful show! I've already lined up a visit to the magnificent Opéra Garnier. It’s been a year since they unveiled the magnificent reconstruction of this stunning theatre, and believe me, dear tutus, it is breathtaking! I plan to catch the ballet La Source – a beautiful romance, much like the way we all adore the history of tutus!
Now, darling tutus, I simply must get back to Paris! My adventures are waiting for me – I’ll see you next week with more dazzling tutu tales!
XOXO,
Emma
