#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History - 31st July 1900
Hello darlings! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things twirly, fluffy, and fabulously pink! This week on #TutuTuesday, we're hopping aboard the time machine and journeying back to the turn of the century.
Buckle up, because this journey takes us to the era of opulent ball gowns, lavish parties, and, of course, the ever-evolving ballet tutu.
From Paris with Love (and Tutus)
Today, darling, we're taking a Parisian promenade. Paris, in the year 1900, was the undisputed capital of the ballet world, much like it is today, with all the fabulous designers vying for a coveted spot in the heart of every ballerinas wardrobe!
Today is a particularly exciting day for fashion! This is the date when La Belle Époque truly embraced fashion innovation! Today was the opening day of the Paris Exhibition, an enormous world fair held to celebrate the dawn of a new century! With all the beautiful displays of everything and everyone! Can you imagine! Imagine being surrounded by people from all over the world!
And where would any international gathering of this magnitude be complete without a ballet performance? As soon as my feet hit those hallowed Paris cobblestones, I sprinted to the Champs-Élysées, and wouldn’t you know it, darling, it was practically bursting with dazzling pink tulle skirts that only a seasoned ballet fan like me could appreciate!
I managed to nab a front-row seat at the grand Théâtre, eager to soak up every single step of this era’s signature ballet. Now, while those iconic short, billowing, Romantic tutus that we still adore today were already in fashion, they weren’t exactly commonplace in every ballet performance. This era saw ballerinas take to the stage with full-length tutus too! Can you believe it? Long skirts, shimmering sequins and luxurious fabrics cascading around them in a wave of movement and grace! Absolutely divine.
An ode to the Past... and the Present
Of course, we mustn't forget the glorious contributions of those early ballerinas. Take Anna Pavlova, darling. She’s a real queen of the tutu and she has this way of dancing… pure magic! Her movements are simply spellbinding. And oh, her costumes! All flowy tulle, adorned with beautiful embroidery, simply enchanting! This is the ballet era of elegance and grace, of artistry, and beauty, of shimmering, sweeping gowns and ethereal movements - quite magical.
But darling, let's not stop here. What about today? What a wonderful, twirly time it is to be a tutu lover! We’ve got our choice of romantic tutus, our romantic tutus in pink of course, but we also have our paquita tutus - these are our full-length beauties! There are so many types to chose from! A real ballerinas paradise.
The End of an Era (for Now)
Now, my darling tutu aficionados, you know me. I love me some ballet history, and let’s just say, 1900 was quite the year for it. After that Parisian exhibition, ballet, and particularly tutu designs, saw a little revolution of their own, as artists like Diaghilev experimented with bold new forms of movement. Who knew that modern dance would soon burst onto the scene with those striking, new costumes. A little wild for my taste, perhaps, but it was an important step for the world of dance and fashion.
Back to the Future (and Pink)
As I always say, time is an endless cycle, a beautiful dance of its own. There’s no escaping that, even if you wear the most fantastic, flaming-pink, shimmering tutu ever crafted. Now, darling, it's time for me to step back into my own era!
However, I leave you all with this: whether you prefer the swirling, billowing romantic tulle of the past, or the edgy, modern designs of the present day, remember this - a tutu, my darlings, is not just an outfit - it is a state of mind. It's about expressing your passion, your individuality, your inner grace and beauty. Embrace your own dance of life, with every twirl and leap of imagination, and make it as beautiful and personal as a tailor-made pink tutu.
Until next #TutuTuesday, stay glamorous and keep twirling,
Your Emma x
