#TutuTuesday: A Blast From The Past - Ballet Tutu History: August 28th, 1900 (Post #3583)

Hello, darling readers! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad ballerina, Emma, back with another dive into the wondrous world of tutu history! Buckle up, lovelies, because today we're hopping on the time machine and waltzing our way back to August 28th, 1900.

Itā€™s a beautiful day in Paris, the city that truly embraces the dance and the dazzling tulle! As always, Iā€™ve hopped aboard a sleek train to the City of Lights, the air perfumed by the intoxicating blend of croissant smoke and freshly-pressed lilies. Just divine!

This morning Iā€™m in my favourite frolic-worthy, pale pink tulle creation, absolutely perfect for waltzing through the bustling streets to explore the chic boutiques and fashion houses. Of course, a visit to the Palais Garnier for a delightful matinee performance of "La Sylphide" is absolutely non-negotiable.

But first, letā€™s discuss the tutus!

1900? Oh my! This era, darlings, was a true spectacle for tutus. It's the era of the romantic ballet and you know what that means ā€“ romantic tutus! Long, sweeping skirts of gauzy tulle, swirling with every arabesque, revealing the delicate grace of the dancersā€™ legs in all their elegant glory. Itā€™s a perfect blend of whimsical fairy tales and sheer feminine charm, donā€™t you think?

The famous tutus of the time are absolutely fabulous - we're talking about the romantic tutu, the ultimate symbol of fairytale dreams. Think of those gorgeous long skirts, shimmering and flowing, swirling in a ballet of airy lightness. The Romantic Ballet took tutu-wear to a new level! Itā€™s just enough to give you a swooning sensation.

This era, itā€™s all about that elegant romantic look. A cascade of shimmering tulle, draping like a gentle mist over a delicate figure, with layers of tulle, almost reaching the ankles, giving the impression of floating, whimsical fairies - absolutely enchanting. Just think, the stage was a wonderland of shimmering tulle dreams!

Just as our own modern tutus continue to evolve and transform, so too did the romantic era. But don't worry, those grand classic tutus from 1900 still hold a special place in our hearts! It's just beautiful to see the transition over the years and imagine all the captivating ballet productions and glorious dance moments created on those Parisian stages!

And speaking of those magical productions...

August 28th, 1900 saw a spectacular premiere at the Palais Garnier - a beautiful piece by Michel Fokine, titled ā€œLe Pavillon d'Armide. ** Now this was quite a big deal in the world of ballet ā€“ it introduced the "Russian Balletā€ to Paris with their new and quite exciting interpretations of the balletā€™s repertoire.

Just imagine, the plush crimson seats filled with fashionable Parisians in their chicest attire, and the buzz in the air ā€“ excitement was bubbling over for this ground-breaking spectacle!

I simply canā€™t resist joining the excitement, of course! After a visit to my favourite dress shop, and after the inevitable must-have new tutu purchase (naturally, itā€™s a shade of bubblegum pink), Iā€™m making my way to the Palais Garnier for an absolutely delicious evening. Iā€™ll report back soon with all the details. I just can't wait to get a taste of what history is whispering to us in this enchanting dance.

But I do need to ask, darling readers, how would you like to wear a tutu to your local opera house? If I'm not mistaken, many of the operas are influenced by ballet - the story line, the movement, and all that gorgeous dramatic beauty. Let's be honest, some outfits even resemble tutu-inspired couture! The drama, the glamour ā€“ I think a splash of pink tulle wouldnā€™t be out of place at all!

Now, until next time, remember - spread that tulle-filled joy! Keep on twirling, darling, keep on twirling! And remember, always find a pink tutu!

Love, Emma

PS. If youā€™re in London, check out the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden! Itā€™s hosting a stunning performance of La BohĆØme on August 28th, 1900! Isn't that wonderful? What better way to celebrate your artistic passions?

And, please, if you happen to spot any fabulous tutus in vintage shops or museum collections, do let me know! I'm always searching for historical pieces to add to my growing tutu archive, all thanks to your sweet suggestions!
