#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1901-01-22 - A Century of Twirling! (Blog Post No. 3604)

Hello, darlings! It’s your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here, and I’m back with another captivating entry in my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog. Today, we're twirling back to 1901, a time of grand balls, elaborate costumes, and the burgeoning ballet scene that would shape the art form as we know it today.

I landed in the vibrant city of Paris, the heart of ballet, with the crisp scent of winter air in my nose and a thrilling buzz of excitement coursing through my veins. 1901! It’s so incredibly exciting to be here and witness the dazzling elegance of the early 20th century. Today, you'll see my pink tutu twirling around the charming cobblestone streets as I soak up the atmosphere.

My dear readers, you know I adore travelling by train, and today I had the pleasure of gliding across the French countryside, marvelling at the beautiful scenery and catching glimpses of the countryside life. Imagine, the journey itself feels like a graceful ballet - the train gliding on its tracks, the rhythmic click-clack of the wheels, the rhythmic swaying of the carriages... a truly magical experience!

This evening, I’ll be attending a performance at the esteemed Paris Opera. I can barely contain my excitement! To see the grandeur of a Paris Opera performance, with the audience glittering in their finest attire, is an experience like no other. Can you picture it? Velvet, satin, plumes, sparkling jewels - all intertwined with the elegance and artistry of a balletic performance, making my heart sing with anticipation.

As always, I’ll be closely observing the ballet dancers and their attire, my eyes twinkling at each delicate detail, from the romantic tutus to the exquisite dance shoes, to discover what trends were gracing the stage and influencing the fashion of the era.

The Evolution of the Tutu in 1901

Let’s delve into the tutu, shall we? Remember, darlings, our tutus are constantly evolving, like butterflies changing from caterpillar to chrysalis to graceful beauty! Back in 1901, the tutu was transitioning from the romantic and ethereal styles of the 19th century.

Think light, airy fabric, long flowing skirts – like clouds gently swaying in the wind!

A few highlights for the tutus of this time:

  • The Romantic Era’s Legacy: Although the romantic era was slowly fading, its influence on the ballet tutus was still strong, influencing the light and airy styles still prominent at this time.

  • The Gradual Transition: By 1901, tutus started to get a touch more form fitting! We are seeing an early evolution toward a more structured design - a sign of the exciting changes that were coming to the dance world in the next few years.

  • The Emergence of New Choreography: As choreographers like Marius Petipa explored new and demanding forms of ballets, a gradual transition towards more comfortable and practical costumes, like shorter tutus, became a necessity. You can almost feel the wind of change whipping around these amazing ballet dancers!

  • Embroidery, Feathers, and Ribbons: Oh, darling! You simply must have noticed the extravagance of these early 20th-century tutus! These beautiful dance garments are adorned with exquisite embroideries, soft plumes of feathers, delicate ribbons, and embellishments. These delightful details not only add an air of glamour and sophistication, they reflect the rich craftsmanship of the period.

  • Tutu Shades: The traditional white and pale pink, inspired by the soft colours of the Romantic era, remain prominent in 1901. You might find shades of blue and pale yellow making an appearance too - bringing a sense of springtime elegance to the stage.

The tutus were transforming, slowly yet surely. It is captivating to witness these changes first-hand, just like a new dance sequence slowly revealing itself before your very eyes.

The Parisian spirit is all about ‘art de vivre’ - the art of living! There is a delightful emphasis on beauty, style, and grace in everything they do. And of course, what better way to embrace this spirit than to don a stunning tutu and dance through the city's captivating streets, creating your own unique story of style and whimsy!
